AMES, IOWA – The Citadel men's basketball team fell to No. 20 Iowa State in Hilton Coliseum on Sunday afternoon.
Â
Iowa State (3-0) got off to a fast start with a 12-point run to open the game but a three by
Kaelon Harris ended the Bulldogs' (3-2) drought and got The Citadel on the board.
Â
With 5:10 remaining in the first half, Iowa State stole the ball and had a wide-open lane but
Quayson Williams made a great hustle play tracking the Cyclones' player down and knocking the ball away. On the ensuing play,
Zane Najdawi hit a three-pointer from the top of the arc to give him five points in the game. That was the last field goal the Bulldogs made in the first 20 minutes as the half ended with the Cyclones leading 62-22. Â Â Â
Â
The Citadel found some offensive rhythm in the second half, hitting five treys in the first 10 minutes and finishing the game with 15.
Preston Parks and
Matt Frierson gave the Bulldogs a spark at the 15:49 mark, as Parks hit a three-pointer and then a layup and Frierson followed with back-to-back threes. The treys forced ISU to call a timeout but Frierson responded with another three ball 12 seconds later. The deficit was too much to overcome though as the Bulldogs fell 130-63.
Â
The Citadel had three Bulldogs finish in double-figures and were led by Williams with 15 and Frierson who chipped in 12. Williams and Frierson combined for eight three-pointers in the contest as the sophomores have both made at least one trey in every game this season. Harris recorded his second consecutive game in double-digits as he finished with 10 points and eight rebounds.
Â
The Bulldogs wrap up their three-game road swing Wednesday at Arizona State. Tip is set for 4 p.m. ET inside Wells Fargo Arena in Tempe, Arizona. Â
