Bulldogs To Host Final Non-Conference Tournament

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel volleyball team will be at home for its final non-conference tournament of the season, hosting the Bulldog Invitational on Friday and Saturday at McAlister Field House.

The Bulldogs welcome four teams to the tournament, including crosstown rival Charleston Southern. Savannah State, Austin Peay and Elon will all visit Charleston for the Bulldog Invitational.

The Citadel will open the tournament on Friday at 9 a.m., facing Austin Peay. They will then play the last match on Friday at 7 p.m. against Elon. On Saturday, the Bulldogs take on Savannah State at 11:30 a.m., followed by Charleston Southern in the tournament finale at 7 p.m.

Outside hitter Moriah Smith continues to be one of the top players in Division I and the Southern Conference. She leads Division I in total attacks with 595, ranks fourth in total kills with 211 and fifth in total points with 227.5. Smith's program-record 35 kills on Aug. 27 against Gardner-Webb are the third most by any player in a single match in Division I this season. The junior leads the Southern Conference in a number of categories, including kills, kills per set, points, points per set and total attacks.

The Bulldogs lead the SoCon in total kills with 543, service aces with 62, total digs with 758 and total assists with 519. The team also ranks fifth in Division I in total digs.

The Citadel will meet Austin Peay for the second time in program history. The Governors took a three set victory over the Bulldogs back in 2013 at the South Florida Tournament in Tampa, Florida.

The Bulldogs will be looking for their first victory over Elon, with the two teams' last meeting in 2013 when Elon was a member of the SoCon. This will be the second non-conference match between the two programs.

Savannah State and The Citadel are very familiar with each other, meeting up once already this season on Sept. 1 at the Bash in the 'Boro in Statesboro, Georgia. The Bulldogs won that match in three sets, extending their winning streak over the Tigers to 25 matches.

Like the Tigers, the Bulldogs also met up with Charleston Southern earlier this season at the Bash in the 'Boro. The Citadel took a close 3-2 win over the Buccaneers that afternoon, marking the sixth victory in program history against Charleston Southern. This will be the 26th meeting between the two programs, with each team trading off victories in the last four matches.

Live video and stats will be available for all four of The Citadel's matches at the Bulldog Invitational. Live stats will also be provided for the remaining six matches of the tournament.
