CHARLESTON, S.C. – In an effort to help raise donations for hurricane relief, The Citadel men's basketball team has added a second exhibition game for the preseason. The Bulldogs will travel to Hickory, N.C., on Sunday, Oct. 29, to take on the Bears of Lenoir-Rhyne (NCAA Division II) with all proceeds from the game going to the American Red Cross to help those in Florida and Puerto Rico who have been affected by recent hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria.
The game, which will tip off at 3 p.m., was made possible due to a special waiver the NCAA is granting NCAA Division I schools. The waiver allows programs to add a second exhibition game as long as all proceeds go to relief efforts. Close to two dozen games have been added across the nation in recent days to raise donations for those affected by the hurricanes, California wildfires and the Las Vegas shooting, according to the NCAA.
Hurricane relief touches home even more so for the Bulldog men's basketball team as sophomore guard
Leandro Allende hails from Puerto Rico while freshman guard
Rob Johnson and freshman forward
Derek Webster, Jr. are both from the state of Florida.
"It is a special privilege to play in this exhibition to raise funds for those impacted by the hurricanes," said head coach
Duggar Baucom. "Our team has been personally touched by the storms' devastation, having players from Puerto Rico and Florida. Living in Charleston, we are all very aware of the destruction hurricanes can cause. This is just a small way we can help others in need during this difficult time. We are very appreciative of our athletic administration's hard work and support in this worthwhile cause."
In a similar move, The Citadel volleyball team took on the Wofford Terriers Wednesday night as the two programs took part in "Paws for a Cause" in an effort to raise funds for Puerto Rico's hurricane relief. The two schools combined to raise over $1,600.
