BOX SCORE (PDF)

CHARLESTON, S.C.
– On a record-setting afternoon, The Citadel baseball team put itself in the history books with a 34-8 victory over Winthrop on Tuesday at Joe Riley Park.

The Bulldogs (5-10) broke nearly 35-year program records for runs (34) and hits (34) in a single game. The previous records of 27 runs and 32 hits were both set on April 5, 1982 against Davidson.

The 34 runs scored are the highest in a single game in NCAA Division I this season.

The Citadel set a new Southern Conference record with the 34 hits and posted the second-highest run and RBI (31) totals in conference history. The Bulldogs also tied the fourth-highest total in the SoCon record books with 52 total bases.

Barrett Charpia and Jonathan Sabo led the offensive barrage with two home runs apiece. Charpia finished the career day 5-for-8 with nine RBI and two runs scored. The senior finished just one RBI short of tying the individual program record set in 1998 by Jerry Simmons. Sabo also went 5-for-8 with six runs scored and five RBI. Both players set program records with eight at-bats each.

William Kinney also finished a career day, batting 6-for-7 with six RBI and five runs scored. The junior shortstop tied the program record with four doubles, which was set by Mark Mitchum in 1979 against Furman.

Joining in with huge days at the plate were Taylor Cothran and J.D. Davis, who each posted their first career four-hit games. Cothran tied the program record with six runs scored, the third player to accomplish the feat in Bulldog history. The sophomore outfielder also drove in four runs. Davis scored two runs, adding a double and an RBI.

Ben Peden finished 3-for-6 with four runs and four RBI. Cole Buffington, Bryce Leasure and Joe Sabatini each added two hits. John Thelan recorded his first career hit and Clay Martin scored two runs, was walked three times and hit by a pitch in four plate appearances.

The Bulldogs opened the game scorching hot, scoring five runs in the bottom of the first after falling behind 1-0. They added a run in the second, followed by four in the third and six in the fourth.

Then in the fifth inning, The Citadel offense exploded for 12 runs, capped off by Charpia's second three-run home run. The 12 runs scored are the third-highest total in a single inning in Bulldog history after The Citadel scored 13 in 1987 and 1996.

Alex Bialakis drew the start for The Citadel, throwing four innings with four runs allowed. Aaron Lesiak (2-0) earned the victory after striking out five batters in 1.2 innings. The Bulldog pitching staff struck out 14 batters on the afternoon.

The Citadel will look to continue scorching play in a four-game series against Dartmouth. The Bulldogs host Dartmouth beginning Thursday at 4 p.m.
