CHARLESTON, S.C. – With the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the 10th inning,
William Kinney drew a five-pitch walk to bring home
Clay Martin and send the Bulldogs off with an 8-7 victory over Dartmouth on Saturday at Joe Riley Park.
Kinney nearly ended the game in the ninth inning, driving a triple off the left-field wall that narrowly missed a two-run walk-off home run. The triple still brought home the tying run in
Ben Peden and extended the game into extra innings.
The junior shortstop finished 3-for-5 at the plate with two RBI and a run scored along with his first triple of the year.
The Bulldogs (7-11) rallied three different times in the game with the first coming after falling behind 4-1 through two innings. In the fourth, The Citadel tied things up with three RBIs, one by
Bryce Leasure and two on a single by
Taylor Cothran.
The Citadel fell behind again 6-4 as Dartmouth scored two runs in the fifth. The Bulldogs continued to peck away with a run in each of the seventh and eighth innings to knot things up again 6-6.
Taylor Cothran helped lead the offense going 3-for-6 at the dish with three RBI. The Bulldog right fielder nearly ended the game with a two-run home run in the 10th inning, but the ball bounced high off the scoreboard in left field, resulting in a double.
Joe Sabatini finished 2-for-4 with a run and RBI and Leasure posted a 2-for-3 day, also adding a run and RBI.
Aaron Lesiak picked up his third victory of the season with a shutout inning in the 10th.
Will Abbott threw six strong innings in relief, allowing three runs, one earned, on five hits.
Jordan Buster earned his first start of the season, striking out four batters over 2.2 innings.
The Bulldogs will wrap up the four-game series with Dartmouth on Sunday as they look for the series victory. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Joe Riley Park with live stats and video available at CitadelSports.com.
