Volleyball Preview: Bulldogs Set For Four Matches In Four Days

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel volleyball team preps for the next four days that will include two road matches and two home battles. The Bulldogs will travel to Western Carolina Oct. 11, for a match at 6 p.m., followed by ETSU on Oct. 12 at 3 p.m. They'll return home Oct. 13, taking on Delaware State at 6 p.m. and North Carolina Central Oct. 14, at 6 p.m.
 
#BATTLEREADY (ABOUT THE CITADEL)
The Bulldogs are 4-11 overall and 0-4 in the conference heading into this weekend after dropping a match at Furman, 1-3 last Saturday.

Setter Megan Fuhr continues to rank among the top 10 in the conference for assists per match, averaging 8.06 per set. The Citadel ranks second among conference competition in service aces and digs per set, averaging 1.74 and 14.76, respectively.
 
Senior Sarah Dobrich is now the all-time leader in program history for career blocks. The middle blocker entered the season with 324 total blocks and has amassed 37 over 14 matches this year. She now sits with 361, passing previous leader Lauren Hurt (343), with 14 regular season matches left to play.
 
THE CITADEL VS OPPONENTS (THE HISTORY)
The Citadel is 8-30 against Western Carolina all-time, winning the last two out of three meetings. Most recently, the Bulldogs won the program's first-ever post season win during the first round of the SoCon Tournament.
 
The Bulldogs will depart from Western Carolina and head straight for ETSU. The Citadel will be looking to earn its first win in program history against the Bucs.
 
The Citadel's match on Sunday, Oct. 13 against Delaware State will be the first meeting between the two teams. Following the match on Monday, Oct. 14 the 'Dogs will host North Carolina Central. The Bulldogs fell to the Eagles earlier in the season on the road, 1-3.

SCOUTING THE CATAMOUNTS
The Catamounts of Western Carolina enter the weekend at 10-7 overall and 4-0 in the SoCon. So far this conference season they have defeated UNCG, Furman, Mercer, and Chattanooga. Western Carolina's win against Chattanooga was its eighth straight victory.
 
The Cats lead the conference in kills per set, averaging 12.97.  The offense is led by Abigail Veit and Merry Gebel who round out the top five in the conference for kills per set, averaging 3.58 and 3.45, respectively. Junior setter Hannah Price has garnered 575 assists on the season for a 10.45 assist per set average.
 
SCOUTING THE BUCCANEERS
The Buccaneers of ETSU are currently 13-3 overall and 4-0 in the conference. They have defeated conference foes Furman, UNCG, Chattanooga, and most recently, Mercer. The Bucs are riding a six-game win streak with wins over Georgia Southern and North Dakota State.
 
Four members of the ETSU squad average above 2 kills per set, with Olivia Cunningham leading the way, averaging 3.74. The Bucs lead the way in the SoCon with a .232 hitting percentage.
 
SCOUTING THE HORNETS
The Delaware State Hornets come in to the first ever meeting with the Bulldogs 7-11 and 2-2 in the MEAC.  The Hornets will be coming off almost a week long break after defeating Norfolk State, 3-1.

They are led on the front row by Anadys Valentin and Ryanne Burnett who both average above three kills per set. The team averages an even 12 kills per set to their opponents 11.40. The Hornets also average 1.82 service aces per set, and Jasmal Cruz leads the way with 33 on the season.
 
SCOUTING THE EAGLES
This will be the second meeting the season between the Eagles and the Bulldogs. NCCU is 3-14 on the season with one of those victories being over The Citadel in Durham, N.C.
 
The Bulldogs fell at North Carolina Central in a tough, 1-3 battle. Three Eagles recorded double-digit kills, while the team recorded a .279 hitting percentage to the 'Dogs' .175. NCCU also put up 12 total blocks on the night to The Citadel's 5.

The Bulldogs will have just a day off before hosting Wofford on Wednesday, Oct. 16 at 6 p.m.
