Soccer Drops SoCon Opener at UNCG Despite Two Second-Half Goals

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Despite scoring a pair of second-half goals, including Jenna Adcock's first-career goal, The Citadel women's soccer team dropped the Southern Conference opener, 4-2 on the road at UNC Greensboro.

KEY PLAYS (Scoring Summary)
14' – Gabi Santora scored the game's first goal with a shot into the bottom right corner off an assist from Cienna Rideout.
21' – Kayla Campbell scored her third goal of the season to make it 2-0 with a header off a corner by Santora.
46' – Logan Dix pulled the 'Dogs back to within one with her second penalty kick, and fourth goal, of the season just 41 seconds into the second half.
57' – Jordin Mosley scored her first goal of the season with a shallow shot from just outside the six-yard box.
74' – Rideout made it 4-1 with a goal off a Maddy Gilhool corner kick.
86' – Adcock scored her first career goal off an assist from Suzuka Yosue.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • UNCG came out shooting, recording 14 shots in the opening period to just one by the Bulldogs.
  • The Spartans had three shots and a goal before Hannah Roth recorded the first shot of the game for The Citadel.
  • Despite trailing 2-0 midway through the first period, the Bulldogs continued to fight.
  • The Bulldogs managed to pull back to within one goal just 41 seconds into the second half, but UNCG was able to pull ahead by two again minutes later.
  • After managing just one shot in the first half, the 'Dogs took eight shots in the second half and held the Spartans to nine shots.
  • The Spartans held a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.

NOTABLES
  • With Adcock scoring in the second half, the Bulldogs have now had eight first-time collegiate goal scorers this season, extending the program record out. The previous record was six set by the 2002 team and matched by the 2010 and 2018 squads.
  • The Bulldogs have now had 14 different goal scorers this season.
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Maddie Somogyi made nine saves in between the pipes Friday night, marking a new career high.
  • Somogyi now boasts 33 saves on the year, a mark that has her eighth in program history for saves by a sophomore keeper.
  • Yosue recorded her fifth assist of the season. She is now tied for second in program history for assists by a freshman and is just two away from the program record set by Lea Raedle during the 2013 campaign. Yosue is tied with Mel Mikoy's 2018 season and Vanessa Aponte's 2010 season.
  • With her fourth goal of the season, Dix is now tied for seventh in program history for goals scored by a junior. She is tied with Kelly Pesterfield's 2003 campaign and her next goal will move her up into a tie for fifth.

The Citadel will make the trek up to Lexington, Virginia to face VMI on Sunday, Sept. 29 at 1 p.m.
