Bulldogs Shut Out Keydets on the Road

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Citadel women's soccer team used goals from Suzuka Yosue and Taylor Diggs to defeat the Keydets of VMI, 2-0 on the road Sunday afternoon in Southern Conference action.

KEY PLAYS (Scoring Summary)
16' – Yosue scored her second goal of the season with a run up the near side before bending a shallow shot into the net.
74' – Hannah Roth took a free kick from 40 yards out. It bounced off the wall and Diggs was waiting to put boot to ball for the score.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Citadel came out and immediately established itself as the more hungry team, out shooting the Keydets 12-4 in the opening 45 minutes of action.
  • The Citadel got five shots off before VMI managed to get its first shot of the game.
  • In the fourth minute, Devyn Nyhart had an opportunity to put the Bulldogs up 1-0 with a penalty kick, but VMI's keeper, Noelle Heilpern, made the save.
  • In the 26th minute, Yosue broke through for her second goal of the season with her run and score.
  • The Bulldogs outshot the Keydets 4-1 from there, but were unable to extend the lead out.
  • VMI came out like a team on a mission in the second half, outshooting the 'Dogs 15-8, including taking 12 shots before the Bulldogs could get their first second-half shot.
  • In the 74th minute, Yosue drew a foul about 40 yards out and Roth set up for the free kick. Her set piece ricocheted off VMI's wall, but fell at the waiting foot of Diggs who got one touch on the ball for the score while colliding with the VMI keeper.
  • From there, the Bulldogs outshot the Keydets 3-1 to secure the shutout victory.
  • Sophomore Maddie Somogyi (3-2-2) earned her third win of the season between the pipes, while making seven saves. Heilpern (1-9-1) made six saves while taking the loss.
  • VMI falls to 0-5 at home and has lost three straight.

NOTABLES
  • The win is the 85th win overall in program history and the 25th regular-season SoCon victory.
  • The Citadel has earned a positive result in five of their last six games, going 3-1-2 in that stretch.
  • The win over the Keydets is the second straight for the Bulldogs following the 2018, 4-3 win in Charleston. It is the first time since the 2003 and 2004 seasons that The Citadel has beaten VMI in back-to-back years.
  • The 2-0 win over VMI is the first road win over the Keydets for the Bulldogs since a 3-0 win in 2014 in the SoCon Tournament.
  • The 2-0 win is just the second shutout victory for The Citadel in the head-to-head series.
  • The win over VMI in the second Southern Conference game of the season is tied for the second quickest conference victory in program history. The 2010 team won the SoCon opener, and the 2009, 2011 and 2012 teams won their second SoCon games of the season.
  • The shutout victory over VMI is the fourth shutout of the season for the Bulldogs. The four shutouts are the most since the 2016 team registered five shutouts. The 2009 team also posted five shutouts to set the record.
  • With her second goal of the season, Yosue now has nine points (two goals, five assists). She is tied for 15th in program history for points by a freshman.
  • Somogyi now boasts 40 saves and three wins on the year. Her 40 saves are eighth in program history for saves by a sophomore keeper and her three wins have her fourth in program history for wins by a sophomore.
  • With her second assist of the season, Roth now boasts eight for her career, moving her into sole possession of sixth in program history. Roth now boasts 22 career points, tied for 15th in program history.

The Bulldogs will close out the current three-game road swing on Thursday, Oct. 3 with a 7 p.m. game at Mercer.
