Bulldogs Earn First-Ever Positive Result Against Bears Off Dix’s Goal

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Senior Logan Dix cracked the top five in program history for career goals scored Thursday afternoon as she scored her third goal of the season. Dix's 18th goal of her career helped guide The Citadel women's soccer team to its first-ever positive result with the visiting Mercer bears in the form of a 1-1, double-overtime draw.

Due to heavy rains during Wednesday night and early Thursday morning, the game, which was originally scheduled to be played at Washington Light Infantry (WLI) Field, had to be moved to Wilson Field and Track's artificial surface.

GAME INFORMATION
Score: The Citadel 1, Mercer 1
Records: The Citadel (1-0-1), Mercer (0-1-1)
Location: Wilson Field, Charleston, S.C.

SCORING SUMMARY
6' – Mercer went up 1-0 off Amaya Evans' first goal of the season.
76' – Dix scored her third goal of the season with a header off a set piece by fellow senior Kate Manzione.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Despite both teams being members of the Southern Conference, Thursday's game at Wilson Field was designated as a non-conference tilt.
  • Both teams started off the game very aggressive with Dix logging the first shot of the game just 23 seconds in.
  • Mercer's first shot resulted in the goal by Evans.
  • From there, the two teams seemed evenly matched, with each having its chances with looks on goal.
  • The first half ended with Mercer holding a 7-5 advantage in shots.
  • The second half began with Mercer being flagged for two fouls in the first five minutes before Suzuka Yosue took the Bulldogs' first shot of the half.
  • In the 76th minute, Dix knotted the score at one-all with her third goal of the season.
  • From there, both sides played with plenty of hustle and determination, but neither was able to find the go-ahead goal during regulation, resulting in a pair of 10-minute, golden-goal overtime periods.
  • After it was all said and done, Mercer held a 17-13 advantage in shots, including 11-6 for shots on goal.
  • Dix led the way for the Bulldogs with five shots, four being on frame, while Leanne Bryant and Yosue each notched a pair of shot.
  • Evans led all players with seven shots, five being on frame.
  • Freshman goalkeeper Jess Newton recorded 10 saves on the afternoon, the most by a Citadel netminder since Kelly Brahmbhatt recorded 10 saves at Samford on Oct. 27, 2018, in the second round of the 2018 Southern Conference Soccer Championships.
  • Mercer utilized 21players compared to just 14 by the Bulldogs.

NOTABLES
  • The draw marks the first-ever positive result with Mercer.
  • With her third goal of the season, Dix moved up a spot to tie Lauren Merchant (2002-05) for fifth in program history with 18 career goals scored. Her next goal will give her fifth outright. She is just three goals away from fourth.
  • Dix now boasts 42 career points (18 goals, 6 assists), moving her up to sole possession of sixth in program history. She is just three points away from cracking the top five.

NEXT UP
The Bulldogs will be off from outside competition for a week in preparation for hosting Atlantic Coast Conference foe Pittsburgh at WLI Field for a pair of games on Thursday, Sept. 24 and Sunday, Sept. 27. The first game is slated for 4 p.m., while the game on Sept. 27 has been moved up to 11 a.m.
