Bulldogs Battle With No. 1 Clemson

CLEMSON, S.C. – The Citadel football team battled for the full 60 minutes and kept No. 1 Clemson off the scoreboard in the second half in a 49-0 setback Saturday afternoon at Memorial Stadium.

How it Happened
  • The Tigers got on the board on their first drive as Trevor Lawrence hit Frank Ladson on a 17-yard touchdown.
  • After a Bulldog punt, Lawrence threw his second touchdown of the quarter. This time he connected with Amari Rodgers on a 44-yard strike.
  • CU added to its lead on the next possession as Lawrence ran it in from two yards out.
  • A Bulldog fumble was scooped up by James Skalski and returned 17 yards for a touchdown.
  • The fifth Tiger touchdown was set up by a long punt return. After being stopped twice near the goal line, D.J. Uiagalelei scored from one yard out. He would later score on another short run.
 
Inside the Numbers
  • The Bulldogs became the first FCS team to face the No. 1 team in the FBS three times. The Citadel also faced No. 1 Florida State in 2014 and No. 1 Alabama in 2018.
  • The Citadel held Clemson scoreless in the second half. It marked the first time since the Georgia State game in 2014 that Clemson was shut out in a half.
  • The game marked the second time in as many games that the Bulldogs played the No. 1 team to a tie for one half of football. The Citadel was tied 10-10 at Alabama at halftime in 2018 and tied with Clemson 0-0 in the second half.
  • The Bulldog defense held Clemson to 107 yards in the second half, including just 42 yards on the ground.
  • Willie Eubanks III and Sean-Thomas Faulkner each finished with nine tackles.
  • Anthony Britton Jr. added eight stops.
  • Javonte Middleton made his first start at corner and finished with seven tackles. He also forced and recovered a fumble.
  • Jaylan Adams saw his first action under center in the fourth quarter and rushed for 50 yards on 12 carries.
  • Raleigh Webb caught one pass for 22 yards, while also completing a 38-yard pass to Ryan McCarthy.

The Bulldogs play their only home game of the fall schedule as they welcome Eastern Kentucky to Johnson Hagood Stadium on Sept. 26. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. and can be seen live on ESPN+.
