Yosue, Saldivar Lead Bulldogs in Season Opener

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Citadel's Suzuka Yosue and Sophie Saldivar each had a goal and an assist to lead the Bulldogs to a 3-1 victory over Gardner-Webb in the season opener Sunday afternoon at Greene-Harbison Stadium.

How it Happened
  • 28' - The Bulldogs struck first as Suzuka Yosue played a ball into the box, just over the head of a jumping defender. Alex Madden got around the goalkeeper with her first touch and placed the ball in the back of the net.
  • 37' - The Citadel added to its lead later in half when Sophie Saldivar played the ball into the box and Ani Ford played the ball around the keeper for Suzuka Yosue to bury the ball in the back of the wide-open net.
  • 62' – Gardner-Webb got the rebound off a free kick and Livi Tanzer was able to get just enough of a piece of the ball to push it across the goal line.
  • 72' - The Citadel got the goal back when Sophie Saldivar took the ball from the defender in the box and buried it in the bottom left corner.
 
Inside the Box Score
  • The victory marked the sixth-straight season the Bulldogs began the season with a victory.
  • The victory was the first in four attempts against Gardner-Webb. The Citadel had been outscored 12-0 in the previous three meetings.
  • The Citadel outshot GWU, 20-9. The Bulldogs also put 11 shots on goal.
  • The Bulldogs came out quickly as they had eight shots, including three on goal, in the first nine minutes of the match.
  • One of the shots deflected off the crossbar.

  • Suzuka Yosue finished the match with a goal and an assist. The assist was the 14th of her career, moving her into a tie for second place on the school's all-time list with Lea Raedle (2013-14).
  • Sophie Saldivar also had a multi-point match with a goal and an assist in her Bulldog debut.
  • Alex Madden scored the first goal of the season in her first appearance in a Bulldog uniform.
