Soccer Season Ends at Samford

Box Score BIRMINGHAM, ALA. –  The Citadel's season came to an end Friday with a 2-nil defeat at Samford in the SoCon Tournament Quarterfinals. Samford struck early with a pair of goals in the opening seven minutes that served as the difference. 

The Lead
•    In their first meeting since The Citadel's 1-nil victory at Samford on Sept. 23, Samford wasted no time with goals in the fifth and seventh minutes. 
•    Head coach Ciaran Traquair's team finished the season at 10-9, marking the first time in program history that The Citadel posted back-to-back winning seasons and consecutive seasons with at least ten wins.

How it Happened
•    5' – Whitaker Buchanon laced a free kick near the goal line from the left side that curled into the top right corner, deflecting off the outstretched hand of Jess Newton.
•    7' – Samford doubled its lead when a free kick bounced to the foot of Layton Glisson, whose shot hit the right post and gathered off the rebound by Ella Simpson who buried it into the net. 

Close Chances
•    23' – Ashley Frank's shot sailed just high of the net. 
•    25' – Direct free kick by Makenzie DePriest-Kessler squeezed her liner past the wall, but into the hands of Emma Donley.
•    26' – Mason Wells' shot just finished to the left of the post.
•    41' – Layla Brown speeded down the right wing, with her shot sailing high. 
•    69' – Grace Duncan swung around to make a big team save after Taylor Yount worked around Brie Sikes and delivered a shot dead center towards the net 
•    88' – Makenzie DePriest-Kessler made a great header attempt that just missed the mark and fell in front of the goal line. 

Inside the Box Score
•    Jess Newton started in goal, collecting five saves before giving way to Brie Sikes in the 21st minute.
•    After the early onslaught of goals, the defense settled to collect eight saves, including one team save on an evening where Samford led 21-6 in shots and 10-3 in shots on goal.
•    Samford led 9-3 in corner kicks. 
•    Ashley Frank led The Citadel with three shots, while Makenie DePriest-Kessler led the team with two shots on goal in as many total attempts.
