Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

The Citadel Forced to Settle for 2-2 Draw at Wofford

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Citadel women's soccer team led 1-0 at halftime and 2-0 early into the second half but a Wofford penalty kick in the 86th minute knotted the match at 2-2 as the Bulldogs left town with a draw on Sunday afternoon.

How It Happened:

16' – CIT secured the first corner kick of the match but were unable to register a shot.
31' – The Bulldogs got on the board first as Elisa Fuentes won a free ball in the Terriers' defensive third and found Maggie Melogy on the left wing before she ripped a low strike from a step inside the 18' into the bottom right corner of the goal, CIT 1-0.
35' – WOF attempted to answer quickly on a corner kick but the shot to the bottom left corner was saved by Nora Sampson.
42' – Melogy missed a pair of shots, one high and one wide, in the closing minutes of the half as CIT held a 1-0 advantage at the break.
51' – The Bulldogs doubled their lead on a PK goal after Melogy's long pass from just inside the midfield line found an open Nicoletta Anuci who tipped the ball past the Terriers goalkeeper before being tripped up inside the box, leading to the yellow card. Fuentes took the PK and buried it into the top left corner of the net, CIT 2-0.
54' – This time WOF was able to respond quickly as CIT gave a Terriers attacker too much space from 25-30 yards out on the left of the pitch and she hit it perfectly into the top right corner to cut the deficit in half, 2-1 CIT.
74' – WOF looked to have the equalizer off a corner kick as a header bounced off the ground and was destined for the right side of the frame, but Alexis Haire was well positioned on the goal line inside the right post to head the ball away from danger.
80' – The Terriers kept the pressure on as a cross from the right side found a WOF attacker running towards the far post, but Sampson was there to make a crucial save.
86' – This time Wofford earned a penalty kick as a Citadel player fouled a Terriers attacker while both were running towards a loose ball inside the left edge of the box, leading to a match tying PK goal.
87' – The Bulldogs had a chance to regain the lead less than a minute later as Anuci's pass into the box was deflected by a Terriers defender and found the foot of Amber Fairfax, but her turnaround shot in traffic missed right of the goal.

Inside the Numbers:

1 – Fuentes' PK goal was the Bulldogs first penalty kick attempt of the season.
5 – This is The Citadel's fifth road draw of the season and sixth overall.
90 – Ellie Belcher played every minute of the match for the 15th time this season while Grace Duncan and Fuentes each did it for the 12th time.
