MACON, Ga. – The Citadel women's soccer team allowed a 25th minute goal off a corner kick and were unable to make it back, falling to Mercer in a SoCon Championship First Round match on Tuesday night.
How It Happened:
8' – MER earned the first corner of the match, but
Nicoletta Anuci kicked the low cross away.
17' –
Caroline Weeren helped give CIT its first scoring chance of the night with a good cross into the box from the right end line, but
Maggie Melogy's header sailed over the crossbar.
25' – Bears got on the board first off a corner kick as a line drive kick to the near post was headed perfectly inside the right post, MER 1-0.
32' – MER tried to add another but an attempt of a bouncing ball at the 18' missed just left of the post.
41' – The Bulldogs made a couple of runs late in the first half, but
Alexis Haire's cross was corralled by the Mercer keeper.
44' – The Bears had a good look late as a drop pass gave MER a wide-open look from the 8' but
Nora Sampson was in perfect position to make the save with no rebound.
53' – MER sent a high, floating ball into the 8' off a free kick and it was loose momentarily before
Kennedi Walker tipped it over the crossbar for a Bears corner, which the Bulldogs also defended.
59' – This time CIT had a free kick opportunity from 35' out but
Ariana Paez's good ball in was deflected away by the MER defense.
74' – Melogy's line drive service from the left wing was just missed by a running
Olivia Rhodes inside the 8'.
75' – MER came right back with a free kick just outside the 18' but the attempt sailed high.
