Etienne Scores in 86th, Bulldogs Draw

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Citadel women's soccer team scored first in the 4th minute but found themselves trailing 2-1 late before Danielle Etienne scored her first goal as a Bulldog in the 86th minute to help earn the 2-2 draw.

How It Happened:
4'   – A free kick from midfield was sent into the box by Celeste Nader which Ariana Paez headed onto Grace Duncan who beat the goalkeeper in the bottom right corner, 1-0 CIT.
16' – USC earned three corner kicks in the minute but the Spartans only shot attempt was blocked.
28' – USC had another good attempt from 17 yards out but it sailed just over the crossbar for a goal kick.
32' – USC knotted the match a few minutes later when a short through ball threaded the needle, leading to a breakaway that Dara Russo finished in the low right portion of the net.
37' – Off a USC corner kick, a shot from inside the box appeared to be destined for the back of the net but Elisa Fuentes, who was standing on the right post, blocked the shot.
43' – Nicoletta Anuci had a good chance to score sprinting down the near side, but the USC goalkeeper made a diving save on a low shot to keep the match tied at halftime.
64' – In a defensive slog of a second half, CIT earned a corner, but it was defended well by USC as no shot was registered off the corner kick.
77' – The Citadel had a free kick deep in USC's half of the field but the ball to the back right post sailed just long for a goal kick.
80' – The Spartans stunned the Bulldogs as a long shot from 25 yards out snuck just under the crossbar to give the home team a late 2-1 advantage.
86' – Fuentes deked out a USC defender and passed the ball to Duncan who redirected the ball forward at the 18' to Etienne. Her ensuing shot from the 6' beat the Spartans' goalkeeper near side to tie the match at 2-2.

Inside the Numbers:
4 – This marks the most ties in a season under Coach Traquair. The previous high was three in the 2020 campaign.
8 – The number of points Paez has in seven matches this season. She combined for a total of eight points over the past two seasons at Newberry.

The Bulldogs play close to home on Wednesday when they head to Charleston Southern for a 3 p.m. match.
