CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel women's soccer team t
ied its' match with the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga at 1-1 with a 61st-minute goal but the Mocs found the game-winner in the 75
th to hand the Bulldogs a 2-1 defeat on senior day.
How It Happened:
5' – UTC earned an early corner kick, but the header shot sailed high over the crossbar.
16' –
Nora Sampson made a save on a UTC shot from the right wing before the rebound was blocked, leading to another UTC corner.
18' –
Kennedi Walker sent a nice ball into the box from the right side, but the ball deflected off a couple of players in the box as CIT was unable to get a shot off.
27' – Sampson made a fingertip save to lift the ball over the bar, forcing a UTC corner.
30' – CIT got a corner of their own, but the kick sailed long through the box.
37' – Another CIT corner was deflected to the foot of
Grace Duncan, but her attempt missed left of the far post.
45' – UTC stunned CIT just before the half as a corner kick with 18 seconds left was free in the box before Reinschmidt's turnaround, no-look shot with two seconds remaining snuck inside the far left post, 1-0 UTC.
51' – CIT had a good chance early in the second 45 as
Maggie Melogy's cross was headed on by
Ryleigh Jenkins but a UTC defender was standing on the right post to turn the ball away.
56' –
Elisa Fuentes let one rip, but the UTC goalkeeper made a diving save at the left post to maintain its' 1-0 advantage.
61' – CIT found the equalizer five minutes later as
Ariana Paez's cross sailed over a Bulldogs' head before a running
Ellie Belcher deflected the ball into the net, for her first as a Bulldog, to knot the match at 1-1.
66' – UTC had another good opportunity at the 18' but the shot missed wide of the right post.
75' – UTC found the game-winner from the 23' as the forward made a move and snuck one just under the crossbar in the middle of the frame to put the Mocs ahead, 2-1 as the Bulldogs were unable to muster a shot in the final 15 minutes of play.
Inside the Numbers:
1 – Jess Newton got her first start of the season on senior day before being relieved by Sampson in the 8
th minute.
79 – Freshman
Zoe Santos made her second appearance of the season in goal for The Citadel as she replaced Sampson, playing the last 11:23 in goal.
90 – Belcher and Duncan have played every minute of the last six matches, with the former playing full-time in the Bulldogs' last seven matches.
