GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Citadel women's soccer team trailed 1-0 at the half before a 52nd-minute goal tied the match as the Bulldogs earned their first SoCon point of the season on Thursday night.
How It Happened:
5' – FUR earned a free kick after a CIT foul, but the ensuing shot was blocked.
21' – FUR registered a shot of a corner kick, but Sampson tipped the ball away after it was headed for the top, right corner of the goal.
29' – The Paladins broke the tie with a goal off a free kick, FUR 1-0.
38' –
Ariana Paez's shot was off target before Sampson made a pair of saves leading in halftime to keep it a one-goal margin at the break.
50' – FUR shot attempt sailed just high over the crossbar early in the second 45.
52' – Off a CIT corner, Paez's kick was deflected in by
Amber Fairfax with her back heel, for her first goal of the season to knot the match at 1-1.
74' – A FUR shot from the 18' hit the outside of the right post.
82' –
Nicoletta Anuci's well-struck shot from 27' out missed right of the frame.
85' – The Bulldogs earned a late corner kick, but this time they were unable to muster a decent shot attempt.
90' – A dangerous cross was sent into the box with 12 seconds left, but
Grace Duncan headed the ball away from danger as a pair of Paladin attackers were lurking.
Inside the Numbers:
1 – This was Fairfax's first start of the season.
3 – Shots on goal allowed by CIT, tied for the second-fewest shots on goal allowed in a match this year.
5 – Five Bulldogs' field players played a full 90 (Belcher, Etienne, Fuentes, Haire, Duncan).
90 – Ellie Belcher and Duncan have played every minute of the last seven matches, with the former playing full-time in the Bulldogs' last eight matches.
