CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel women's soccer team once again held an early lead with a 19th-minute goal, but the North Dakota State University Bison controlled play in the last 10 minutes, scoring in the 86
th off a corner, to escape Charleston with a 1-1 draw.
How It Happened:
5' – NDSU free kick handled with ease by
Nora Sampson, before a team save on a free ball in the 15
th minute.
19' – The Citadel scored when
Ariana Paez controlled the ball with her back to the goal and dropped it back to
Ryleigh Jenkins. When the Bison defenders failed to challenge the Bulldogs one, she struck a beautiful ball inside the top left corner for her first goal of the season.
39' –
Nicoletta Anuci had a 1-on-1 charging down the right side but her pressured attempt sailed high.
49' – After an NDSU free kick, another free ball found the foot of a Bison, but they launched it wide and to the right.
55' –
Samantha Grantham tracked down a great long ball from
Celeste Nader and deked out a couple of defenders in the box, but the Bison defense recovered as the freshman was unable to get a shot off.
60'– The Citadel had a pair of corners kicks, with the other coming in the 67
th, but were unable to muster a shot on frame.
83' – The Bison had the Bulldogs on their heels in the last 10 minutes, earning a pair of corner kicks with Sampson turning one of them away.
86' – The third time was the charm for NDSU as the corner from the near side found a Bison runner, who after a scramble, finished it inside the far post to knot the game at 1-1.
Both teams mustered shots in the closing minutes but nothing too threatening as they each looked to secure a point after a hard-fought match.
