ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The Citadel women's soccer team was in a tightly contested match with UNC Asheville before the second lightning delay of the evening, this time in the 80
th minute, ended the match in a scoreless draw.
How It Happened:
10' – With the game just under 10 minutes old, a lighting delay paused the match for approximately 45 minutes.
28' – The best chance of the night for either team came when UNCA clanked one off the crossbar.
35' – CIT had a pair of corner kicks but did not muster a shot attempt off of either one.
44' – A UNCA corner resulted in a long shot attempt that
Nora Sampson handled with ease.
68' – UNCA threatened once again as a cross into the box from the left, found an open attacker in the box but her point-blank shot was saved by Sampson before she immediately turned away the rebound to keep the match scoreless.
73' –
Elisa Fuentes' close-range shot was stopped by the UNCA goalkeeper, leading to a corner.
76' – Just three minutes later,
Samantha Grantham's blocked shot inside the 18' rebounded to
Ariana Paez, who missed just left of the post on one of The Citadel's best chances of the night.
80' – With The Citadel controlling the pace of play in the last few minutes, another lightning strike in the area ended the game in a 0-0 draw.
Inside the Numbers:
- Sampson made a season-high seven saves for her first clean sheet of the season.
- The five substitutions were the fewest the Bulldogs have made so far this year.
