Bulldogs Battle UNCG to 1-1 Draw

Samantha Grantham converted a penalty kick late in the first half to give the Bulldogs the advantage before UNCG found the equalizer in the 77th minute following an extended weather delay. The Spartans finished with an 11-8 advantage in shots, while both sides placed five attempts on goal. UNCG held a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.
Grantham's goal was her eighth of the season, moving her back into the Southern Conference lead in goals scored.
"Our team was excellent and made things difficult for a very strong UNCG team," head coach Ciaran Traquair said. "We set a target for the girls to stop them from playing and go for the win. The lightning delay came at a bad time because I felt we had good momentum during that period of the game and were chasing a second goal. I'm really proud of the team and their effort. We'll take the point and move on to Mercer."
First Half- Santos was tested early, making her first save in the ninth minute on an attempt from Laney Smith.
- Pack answered with The Citadel's first shot on goal at 11:58, forcing a save from UNCG goalkeeper Blythe Clark.
- UNCG nearly broke through in the 20th minute when Smith struck the right post before Santos made another save just over a minute later.
- Pack continued to pressure the Spartans with another shot on goal in the 24th minute and an additional attempt in the 36th.
- The Bulldogs broke the deadlock at 41:53 when Grantham converted from the penalty spot to give The Citadel a 1-0 advantage.
- Santos made another save in the closing minutes as the Bulldogs carried the 1-0 lead into halftime. UNCG held a 7-5 advantage in shots through the opening 45 minutes.
- Adrianna Gill recorded The Citadel's first attempt of the half in the 53rd minute before Santos denied Smith moments later.
- Pack put another attempt on frame at 59:55, forcing Clark into her fourth save of the match.
- The Citadel generated consecutive corner kicks in the 65th and 66th minutes as the Bulldogs continued to push for a second goal.
- Play was halted during the second half due to weather in the area before the teams eventually returned to the field to finish the match.
- UNCG found the equalizer at 76:42 when Smith scored her fifth goal of the season to make it 1-1.
- Emily Steiner responded less than a minute later with a shot on goal, but Clark made the save to preserve the tie.
- The Bulldogs held firm through the final minutes as the match ended in a 1-1 draw.
