ASHEVILLE, N.C. — Samantha Grantham scored her sixth goal of the season, extending her lead atop the Southern Conference, as The Citadel played UNC Asheville to a 1-1 draw Thursday evening at Greenwood Soccer Field.

"All credit to the players for going on the road and sticking to what makes us productive in our play," head coach Ciaran Traquair said. "Asheville made it tough for us, and we had to continue to try to problem-solve all night to find a winning goal. Sami's goal is of the highest quality, and we tried to follow it up with a late push at the end. Unfortunate not to sneak the win, but happy with our competitive spirit and the moments of quality in the game."

First Half

The opening stretch included five fouls by 8:05, and Jasiah Pack put the Bulldogs' first shot on goal at 5:55.
UNC Asheville generated chances before the breakthrough, including Lili Adams' shot off the top woodwork at 18:38, but Grantham scored off an assist from Gabrielle Macer at 20:49 to give The Citadel a 1-0 lead.
Grantham hit the top woodwork at 23:29 before Kandis Calvin tied the match at 1-1 for UNC Asheville at 24:03 off assists from Lilly Graumann and Landyn Wessels.
Zoe Santos made a save in the 30th minute, and Caelynn January added a late shot before halftime with the match tied at 1-1.

Second Half

The Citadel generated the first shot after halftime when Pack's attempt was saved by London Phoenix at 51:51, then added a corner at 53:07 before UNC Asheville put two attempts high.
Santos saved Arna Hogarth-Scott's shot at 73:41, and UNC Asheville later earned three corner kicks between 76:12 and 80:07 without scoring.
The Citadel created a late push with shots from Grantham and Alixandria Fletcher before January hit the right woodwork at 86:14 and had another attempt saved five seconds later.
UNC Asheville missed high at 88:35 as the match finished 1-1.

Macer's assist on Grantham's goal marked her first assist of the season. Pack led The Citadel with two shots on goal on two attempts, while Santos played all 90 minutes in goal and made two saves.

The Citadel moves to 3-1-2 overall, while UNC Asheville is 1-2-3.

Up next, The Citadel hosts Charleston Southern on Thursday, Sept. 10, at 4 p.m. at Washington Light Infantry Field.
