CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Citadel basketball team opens the 2014-15 season this weekend when it heads to West Point, N.Y., to participate in the fourth annual All-Military Classic. The Dogs tip-off their season against archrival VMI on Friday at 5:30 p.m. and follow with a game against either Air Force or Army to complete the two-day event.
The meeting with VMI, the first of three this season with the Keydets rejoining the Southern Conference, marks the 12th time in The Citadel's basketball history that the Dogs will play the same opponent at least three times as part of the regular season schedule. It is also the second time in program history that the Bulldogs have opened with the same opponent for four straight seasons.
The Keydets have 10 returnees from a 2013-14 unit that finished 22-13 overall and 14-3 in the Big South Conference. Among those is sophomore guard QJ Peterson who torched the opposition for 19 points per contest. Expected to complement Peterson this season are Brian Brown (6.8 ppg / 1.7 apg) and Jordan Weethee (6.7 ppg / 3.7 rpg).
On Saturday afternoon, The Citadel will complete the event against either Army or Air Force. The Dogs have twice met Army in the tournament, posting an 83-72 win in Colorado Springs, Colo., in the second game of the 2011-12 season. The most recent game with the Black Knights took place a season ago in Lexington, Va., when Army used a 20-point effort by Kyle Wilson to down the Bulldogs 84-69.
The last time that The Citadel squared off against Air Force was in Charleston during the 2013 All-Military Classic. In that contest the Falcons' Michael Lyons netted a tournament record 33 points, en route to tournament MVP honors, as Air Force earned a 77-70 victory over the Dogs.
