GAME NOTES
CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel basketball team will open the 2015-16 season at No. 22 Butler on Saturday. Tip off is set for 7:30 p.m. and the game will be televised on Fox Sports 2 (Direct TV channel 618).
Saturday's game marks the first time the Bulldogs will open the season against a Top 25 team since The Citadel faced No. 1 Duke to begin the 1988-89 campaign. A win over Butler in the two schools' first ever meeting would be the first victory over a Top 25 team in The Citadel history.
The Bulldogs are coming off a 118-73 exhibition victory over Erskine last weekend. Freshman
Quayson Williams and junior
Brian White both poured in 22 points as The Citadel sunk 21 three-pointers and racked up 52 points off turnovers in the win. The 21 three-pointers would have tied a school record had stats officially counted. Graduate senior
Derrick Henry added 17 points off the bench and freshman
Matt Frierson tossed in 15 points in 17 minutes of action.
Coach Baucom's fast-paced system was on display as the Bulldogs had 94 possessions during the game. Baucom's 2014-15 VMI squad led the nation in possessions per game last season with 80.1 while The Citadel averaged 61.6 possessions per game a season ago.
Following the clash with No. 22 Butler, The Citadel returns to McAlister Field House for its season opener on Nov. 17. The Bulldogs will face Stetson and the game will be the first of three Pack The Mac events in 2015-16. Tip off is slated for 6 p.m. and tickets are available at PackTheMac.com.
