CHALRESTON S.C. – The Citadel volleyball team will travel to UNC Asheville this weekend to compete in the UNC Asheville Invitational.
 
The Bulldogs (2-5) will take on Alabama A&M and UNC Asheville on Friday at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., respectively. The Citadel will close out the tournament Saturday against South Carolina State at 11:30 a.m. and New Orleans at 4:30 p.m.
 
"We are looking forward to another opportunity to compete," head coach Craig Mosqueda said. "We have improved each of our preseason events and learned from our wins and losses. We're ready to get back on the court."
 
Sophomore Moriah Smith earned a double-doubles in each match of the Runnin' Bulldog Classic. She leads the Bulldogs in overall points with 128.5 and in kills, with 122.
 
Junior Megan Sowell is also a power player in the Bulldogs offense, averaging 3.16 points per set. The right-side hitter posted five service aces against USC Upstate last weekend.
 
Senior captain Rachel Keefer posted a match-high number of assists against both USC Upstate and Gardner-Webb last weekend, contributing to her .276 overall attack percentage.
 
Alabama A&M (1-7) enters the competition following a loss to UT-Martin in their home opener. Their lone win on the season was against Alcorn State on Sept. 4. The Bulldogs are coached by Rose Powell, who is in her second season.  
 
UNC Asheville (2-3) takes the floor after a win against Montreat College on Sept. 4. The Citadel last met with UNC Asheville in 2009, when they fell in three sets to make the all-time series record 0-3. UNC Asheville is coached by Frederico Santos, who is in his fifth season.
 
South Carolina State (0-4) heads to UNC Asheville after a loss to Loyola-Maryland. The squad consists of just nine players, six of which are freshman or sophomores. They are coached by Valerie Jones, who is in her third season.
 
New Orleans (3-3) went 1-2 in its opening weekend, picking up a win against La Salle. The Privateers are coached by Millicent Van Norden, who is in her second season.
