Bulldogs Finish Sixth At SoCon Championships

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The Citadel wrestling team finished sixth in the 2016 Arby's Southern Conference Wrestling Championship, held Saturday inside Kimmel Arena in Asheville, North Carolina.
Appalachian State won the team title with 83.5 points and was followed closely by Chattanooga's 83.0. Gardner-Webb took third with 61.5 points, SIU-Edwardsville was fourth with 51.5 and Campbell finished fifth with 47.5 points. The Bulldogs scored 34.5 points and were followed by VMI's 27.0 and Davidson's 5.5 points.
Junior Aaron Walker advanced to the championship final at 157 pounds. The two-time defending Southern Conference champion won his opening match by tech fall 16-0 at 5:00 and then won the semifinal match by a 12-5 decision. He dropped a 10-6 decision to No. 2 seed Kamaal Shakur of Chattanooga that forced him to wrestle VMI's Neal Richards for the conference's second spot in the NCAA Championships. That match went to overtime, where Richards claimed a 13-11 victory.
Senior Marshall Haas also wrestled his way into the championship match of the 197-pound weight class. The 2014 conference champion started his tournament with a 14-0 major decision win in the first round. He advanced to the championship match behind a 4-2 decision in the semifinal before dropping a tight 3-2 decision to top-seeded Scottie Boykin from Chattanooga.
Ty Buckiso finished third in the 141-pound weight class. The sophomore from Venetia, Pennsylvania, started his run with a 15-8 win in the first round before dropping his semifinal match. Buckiso, the No. 3 seed in the tournament, bounced back to post a 12-3 major decision victory in the consolation semifinal and a 10-3 win in the third-place match.
Senior Matt Frisch won his first-round matchup by major decision with a 10-1 score. Frisch's collegiate career ended with 104 victories after he dropped a tight 3-1 decision in the semifinal and an 8-2 decision in the consolation semifinal.
Freshman Sawyer Root pulled an upset in his first match at 184 pounds as he defeated the No. 2 seed by a 4-2 decision. Root, the No. 7 seed entering the tournament, then dropped an 8-2 decision in the semifinal and a 16-10 decision in the consolation semifinal.
Fellow freshman Patrick Kearney dropped a 6-2 decision in the first round before securing the only pin of the tournament for the Bulldogs, taking down Gardner-Webb's Cortez Starkes at 6:32 in the consolation quarterfinal match. In the consolation semifinal, Kearney lost a 9-3 decision. Classmate Tim Knipl, the No. 6 seed at 174 pounds won his consolation bracket opener by a 5-3 decision.
Junior Joe Bexley bounced back from a first-round defeat to secure a 10-1 major decision in the consolation bracket and then lost a close 4-0 decision in the consolation semifinal. Freshmen Caleb Smith and Daniel Smith, competing at 133 pounds and 165 pounds, respectively, were defeated in both of their matches.
