CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel basketball team returns to action this week with a pair of games, including an away game at Campbell on Thursday, Dec. 14 and a home tilt against Point on Saturday, Dec. 16. Saturday's home game is Teacher Appreciation Day and educators that present a valid school ID will be admitted for $5.
Heading into this week's game, the Bulldogs are ranked inside the top-10 in NCAA Division I in four statistical categories. The Citadel is third or tied for third in the nation in steals per game (12.1), turnovers forced per game (21.7) and three-pointers made per game (12.1). The Bulldogs are also fourth in the nation with 109 steals on the year. The Bulldogs are also in the top-20 in four other statistical categories, including 14th for total three-point field goals attempted (303) and total three-point field goals made (109). The Citadel is also 15th in all of NCAA Division I with 18.4 assists per game and 17th in scoring offense, averaging 88.3 points per contest. Junior guard
Matt Frierson enters the week tied for 28th in the nation as he averages 3.33 three-pointers per game. He is also tied for 42nd in NCAA Division I with 30 made treys on the year.
Heading into Thursday's game in Buies Creek, North Carolina, Campbell leads the all-time series 5-1 over the Bulldogs dating back to the 1971-72 season. The two have met each of the last three seasons after a 33-year break in the series. The Camels won last season's matchup 97-91 in Charleston after defeating the Bulldogs 101-82 in Buies Creek the season before. The Citadel's lone win in the series came on Jan. 8, 1983, 68-50 in Charleston. Campbell owns a 2-0 record in Buies Creek over the Bulldogs.
Campbell enters this year's game with a 4-5 record, including wins over Columbia International, Johnson & Wales, USC Upstate and Stetson. The Camels have dropped four games by six points or less, including a five-point, overtime loss at home to Abilene Christian. Most recently, Campbell fell 69-66 at East Carolina on Monday, Dec. 4. At home, the Camels are 3-2 and have averaged 90.2 points per game in those five contests while holding their opponents to 66.8 points per game, including Columbia International scoring just 44 points and Johnson & Wales scoring just 53.
On the year, Campbell averages 84.6 points per game with opponents averaging 72.8 points per contest (+11.8). The Camels have hit on 50.7% (266-of-525) of their attempts from the field, including 42.3% (91-of-215) from three-point range. Their opponents have only converted 59 three-pointers.
The Camels feature Big South Conference Preseason Player of the Year Chris Clemons, who was ranked second in the country last season in scoring (25.1 ppg), field goals made (301), field goals attempts (673) and three-pointers attempted (332). Last season against The Citadel, he scored 27 points off 9-of-16 (.563) shooting, including going 4-of-8 from three-point range. He owns the Gore Arena record of 39 points scored in the first round of last year's CIT against Houston Baptist after scoring a Big South and school record 51 points in last season's Big South Championship semifinal against UNC Asheville. He already boasts a program-best 10 games in his career where he has scored 30 or more points. This season, he missed the games against East Carolina, Bowling Green and Johnson & Wales, but is averaging a team-best 22.2 points per game off 41.3% (38-of-92) shooting to go along with 4.2 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game. Behind Clemons, Marcus Burk and Shane Whitfield have averaged 19.6 and 12.0 points per game. Burk is the team's leading three-point shooter, having converted 37 of his 73 attempts (.507). Andrew Eudy leads the team under the basket with 5.3 boards per game to go along with 7.8 points. Burk, Whitfield, Eudy and Cory Gensler have started all nine games for the Camels. Clemons has started five games with three other players splitting starting duties in the games Clemons has missed.
Saturday's game against Point University will mark the first-ever meeting between the two programs. The Skyhawks compete in the NAIA Appalachian Athletic Conference and are based in West Point, Georgia. The Skyhawks are currently 3-12 on the year and enter the week averaging 82.9 points per game while giving up 86.7 points per contest (-3.8 scoring margin). Point has scored over 100 points twice, defeating Toccoa Falls at home 117-79 and then losing 115-104 on the road to Reinhardt. The Skyhawks have hit on 43.4% (422-of-973) of their shots from the field, but opponents have hit on nearly 50%, 48.7% (462-of-949) of their shots from the field. Point has only hit on 34.2% (129-of-377), averaging 8.6 treys per game, while opponents have hit 40.2% (136-of-338).
Tyonn Stuckey has led the team with 15.2 points per game in the 13 games he has played in while B.J. Brown and Lawrence Castor have averaged 12.6 and 12.5 points per game with both playing in all 15 contests. Castor has averaged 26.9 minutes per game while hitting on 49.1% (57-of-116) of his shots from the field. Brown has averaged 24.1 minutes per outing and leads the team with 29 three-pointers made. Taboris Griggs is close behind with 28 made treys and Stuckey is third on the squad with 25. Stuckey, who averages 27.5 minutes per game, has hit on 45.5% (25-of-55) of his attempts from three-point range. Under the basket, Castor leads the team with 5.1 rebounds per game and 18 blocks while Chuka Okeke has added 3.4 boards per game and five blocks. Castor, Brown and Jordan Bates have been the only consistent starters for the Skyhawks with Castor starting 12 games while Brown and Bates have each started 10.
Following this week's pair of games, the Bulldogs will hit the road for the final time in 2017 with a road trip to Columbus, Ohio, to take on the Buckeyes of Ohio State. The Citadel and Ohio State will tangle at 7 p.m. on the Big Ten Network on Tuesday, Dec. 19.
