Basketball Travels to Ohio State Tuesday

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel basketball team will take on Ohio State on Tuesday, Dec. 19 in a game aired on the Big Ten Network and the BTN2Go app. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. from Value City Arena.

The Bulldogs enter the week ranked inside the top-10 in NCAA Division I in seven statistical categories. The Citadel is third in total steals (132), steals per game (12.0) and turnovers forced per game (21.4) as well as fourth in three-point field goals made per game (11.6), fifth in three-point field goals attempted (367), seventh in turnover margin (+6.5) and tied for ninth in total three-pointers made (128). The Bulldogs are also in the top-20 in three other categories, including 12th in scoring average (89.3 points per game), tied for 18th in total assists (200) and tied for 19th in assists per game (18.2).

Tuesday's game will mark the first meeting on the hardwood between The Citadel and Ohio State. The Buckeyes enter the week 9-3 on the year and in the midst of a four-game winning streak. Most recently, OSU defeated Appalachian State 80-67 at home on Saturday, Dec. 16 to improve to 7-1 at home this year. The Buckeyes are currently averaging 78.2 points per game, 77.8 points per game at home, while allowing opponents to score just 67.2 points per contest. On the year, Ohio State has hit on 49.5% (337-of-681) of their attempts from the field, including connecting on 35.2% (80-of-227) of their attempts from three-point range. At the same time, the Buckeyes' defense has allowed opponents to convert 42.4% (289-of-681) of their shots from the field and 33.5% (94-of-281) of their attempts from long range. The Buckeyes average 13.8 turnovers per game while forcing 14.4 per contest, but have only come up with 72 steals off the 173 forced turnovers.

A quartet of players lead the way in scoring, highlighted by junior forward Keita Bates-Diop's 18.3 points per game. He has averaged 32.5 minutes per game, shooting 51.9% (81-of-156) from the floor while bringing down 9.3 rebounds per contest. He also has 17 blocks on the year. Jae'Sean Tate and C.J. Jackson are the next two highest scorers, averaging 13.3 and 13.0 points per game. Tate, a senior forward, is currently shooting 59.0% (69-of-117) from the floor but has hit on just 47.5% (19-of-40) of his attempts from the free throw line. A junior guard, Jackson has converted the second-most three-pointers on the team with 22 makes from long range on the year. He is second only to Bates-Diop's 24. Freshman forward Kaleb Wesson rounds out the quartet to average double figures in scoring with 12.5 points per game. He has hit on 58.7% (44-of-75) of his attempts from the field. Bates-Diop and Tate have both started every game this season for the Buckeyes while Jackson has made 10 starts. Wesson has made eight starts and Kam Williams has made six starts on the year.

Following Tuesday's game, the Bulldogs will have 10 days off to enjoy the holidays before opening SoCon play at home on Saturday, Dec. 30 against Western Carolina. The game against the Catamounts will tipoff on ESPN3 at 1 p.m.
