COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Citadel men's tennis team dropped a pair of matches at the University of South Carolina Saturday afternoon by matching scores of 7-0.
"We played a future top-10 team out there today and did not back down," said head coach
Chuck Kreise. "They were better, but we fought to the level in ground strokes and physicality. The difference was their rally tolerance and their first exchanges. I surely believe we are growing by leaps and bounds. The guys love to play these top teams and I know we are growing."
In the day's first match,
Willem van Zyl and
Gavin Stewart took on
Gabriel Friedrich and
Francisco Cerundolo at No. 2 doubles, falling 6-2.
Matthew Henson and
Will Graham played at No. 2 doubles and fell 6-1 to
Thomas Mayronne and
Paul Jubb while
Roy Hobson and
Trey Davis fell 6-1 at No. 3 doubles to
Yancy Dennis and
Harrison O'Keefe.
In singles action, van Zyl fell 6-2, 6-0 to Friedrich at No. 1 with Hobson falling 6-0, 6-1 to Jubb at No. 2 and
Jack Pyritz fell 6-1, 6-3 to Dennis in No. 3 singles action. Henson fell 6-2, 6-1 to O'Keefe at No. 4 singles and Graham fell 6-1, 6-1 to
Wood Benton. Stewart had the most intense matchup of singles action in the day's first match as he fell 7-5, 6-3 to
Thomas Brown.
In the day's second match, Henson and Graham moved up to No. 1 doubles, falling 6-1 to Friedrich and Dennis while van Zyl and Stewart fell 6-0 to Mayronne and Jubb. Davis and Pyritz rounded out doubles pairings with a 6-1 loss to Benton and Cerundolo.
In singles action, van Zyl remained at No. 1, falling 6-3, 6-1 to Cerundolo while Dennis defeated Henson 6-1, 6-0. Pyritz fell 6-0, 6-2 to Mayronne at No. 3 singles and Stewart fell 6-2, 6-2 to O'Keefe at No. 4. Davis and Graham rounded out singles competition at No. 5 and No. 6. Davis fell 6-0, 6-0 to Benton while Graham fell 6-2, 6-2 to Brown.
UP NEXT
The Bulldogs will remain on the road for matches at Alabama and Tennessee next week. The Bulldogs will next head to Tuscaloosa, Alabama, on Monday, Jan. 15 for a single match at 5 p.m. Eastern standard time. The Bulldogs will close out the first tough stretch of the season with a doubleheader on Sunday, Jan. 21 at Tennessee.
The Citadel's first home match will be Saturday, Jan. 27 against Eastern Washington.
