Bulldogs Host In-State Rivals Wofford, Furman This Week

CHARLESTON, S.C. –The Citadel men's basketball team will open up the second half of Southern Conference play and the month of February this week with a pair of home games against in-state rivals Wofford and Furman at McAlister Field House.

The Bulldogs will first welcome the Terriers to town on Thursday, Feb. 1 for a 6 p.m. tipoff with the Paladins coming to McAlister Field House on Saturday, Feb. 3 for a 1 p.m. SoCon tilt.

At halftime of Saturday's game against Furman, The Citadel Department of Athletics will recognize former Citadel basketball point guard and acclaimed author Pat Conroy with a special ceremony. Conroy's wife, Cassandra King-Conroy, as well as his siblings and former teammates are expected to be in attendance to honor Conroy's memory. The game is also being billed as STEM And Faith and Family Day.

Heading into this week, The Citadel, Wofford and Furman are the top three scoring teams in the SoCon in conference action. The Bulldogs lead the league, averaging 80.6 points per SoCon contest with Wofford second, averaging 79.2 points per league game, and Furman third with an average of 79.0 points per contest.

Wofford enters Thursday's game third in the SoCon standings with a 7-2 conference record to go along with a 16-6 overall mark. The Terriers own an all-time record of 56-48 over the Bulldogs and have won four of the last five meetings. In Charleston, the record is 30-27 in favor of The Citadel. The Terriers and Bulldogs last played on Saturday, Jan. 6, with Wofford claiming a 109-92 win in Spartanburg. Since that game, the Terriers have gone 6-1 with the lone loss coming at the hands of ETSU, 75-62 on Saturday, Jan. 27 in Spartanburg.

The Terriers enter Thursday's game averaging 77.4 points per contest and shooting 47.7% (596-of-1250) from the field. Their opponents have managed to score right at 70 points per game while shooting 45.1% (538-of-1192) from the field. Similar to The Citadel, Wofford is dangerous beyond the arc, averaging 10.8 three-pointers per game while shooting 42.3% (238-of-562) from long range.

Wofford is led by Fletcher Magee with 22.4 points and 32.9 minutes per game, Trevor Stumpe with 12.2, Cameron Jackson with 11.5 and Nathan Hoover with 9.8 points per game. While Magee leads the SoCon in scoring, he is tied with Matt Frierson for tops in the league with an average of 4.3 treys per SoCon game. When the Bulldogs and Terriers last met, Magee was limited to just 11 points on 2-of-5 shooting (40%) and made just one three-pointer. This season, Magee has connected on 36 of his 68 free throw attempts (92.6%) and boasts 39 assists on the year.

Jackson leads the team with 6.0 rebounds per game, 26 blocks and 39 steals on the year, but has missed the last three and a half games for the Terriers. Storm Murphy leads the team with 80 assists, an average of 3.6 per game. Magee is the only player to have started all 22 games with Jackson and Murphy each starting 18 games. Stumpe and Derrick Brooks have each started 13 games.

Saturday's game against Furman will be the 209th meeting between the two programs with the Paladins owning an all-time record of 122-86 in the series, including the last four games. In Charleston, the record is 53-46 in favor of The Citadel with the Bulldogs last winning inside McAlister Field House on Jan. 16, 2016, 89-86. The two teams last played each other on Thursday, Jan. 4 with Furman taking the contest 107-67 in Greenville behind 54.9% (39-of-71) shooting and double-doubles by Devin Sibley and Matt Rafferty.

Furman heads into this week averaging 79.5 points, 35.6 rebounds and 10.3 three-pointers per game. The Paladins are currently shooting 46.3% (623-of-1347) from the field, but their opposition is managing to shoot 43.5% (548-of-1261) from the field while averaging 68.1 points per outing.

Sibley leads Furman with 15.3 points per game in 27.4 minutes per outing. He is currently shooting 47.8% (121-of-253) from the field and leads the team with 40 three-pointers on the year. Daniel Fowler and Jordan Lyons are tied for second on the team as both have connected on 38 of their three-point attempts. Rafferty, John Davis and Fowler lead the team with 36, 35 and 33 steals and Rafferty is the top rebounder on the team, averaging 7.5 boards per contest. Rafferty also leads the team in shooting as he has connected on 60.9% (103-of-169) of this attempts from the field. Davis, Rafferty, Fowler and Andrew Brown have started every game for the Paladins with Sibley starting all but one.

UP NEXT
Following this weekend's pair of home games, the Bulldogs will hit the road for the final two-game road swing of the regular season, traveling to Chattanooga on Thursday, Feb. 8 before trekking down to Samford in Birmingham, Alabama, on Saturday, Feb. 10.

On Saturday, Feb. 17, The Citadel Department of Athletics will host the annual Pack the Mac event as the Bulldogs take on rival VMI at 1 p.m. Bulldog fans are encouraged to attend the game and have McAlister Field House loud for the annual rivalry battle between the Bulldogs and Keydets.
