CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Citadel men's tennis team dropped a close Southern Conference match, 4-3 at Chattanooga Friday afternoon at the Champions Club.
"Give Chattanooga credit for winning a 4-3 decision over us today," said head coach
Chuck Kriese. "I knew the doubles point would be important, and although we are showing some signs of improvement, our doubles have to get better. Give (the Mocs) credit, today they were well-coached and fought hard all the way."
Chattanooga (5-5, 1-0 SoCon) started the day off by claiming the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3, but The Citadel (5-11, 0-2 SoCon) got a head start with a 6-2 win by
Gavin Stewart and
Noah Nawabi at No. 1 over
Simon Bustamante and
Niklas Gerdes. No. 1 doubles wrapped up first, giving the Bulldogs confidence, but the Mocs were able to prevail in the other two doubles matches.
At No. 2,
Pablo Llebeili and
Luke Plaisted bested
Jack Pyritz and
Roy Hobson 6-3 with
Jacob Marshall and
Cooper Long securing the point with a 6-2 win over
Will Graham and
Trey Davis at No. 3 doubles.
In singles action, the Mocs wrapped up the match with wins at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 singles. Gerdes defeated Nawabi 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1. Bustamante then bested
Willem van Zyl 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 and Llebeili finished off the Mocs' points with a 6-4, 6-2 win over
Matthew Henson at No. 3 singles.
For the Bulldogs, Stewart continued his recent hot streak with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Plaisted at No. 4 singles. Stewart has now won his last six singles matches, all in straight sets. He has also won three of his last five doubles matches.
At No. 6 singles, Hobson defeated Long 7-6 (7-3), 6-1 and Pyritz wrapped up the day with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Marshall in the No. 5 matchup.
UP NEXT
The Bulldogs have a quick turnaround now as they travel to Atlanta, Georgia for four matches over the next two days. The Citadel will first play Georgia Gwinnett and Rose-Hulman on Saturday, Feb. 24 and will then take on Point and Oglethorpe on Sunday, Feb. 25.
