CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel men's tennis team dropped a home Southern Conference match 5-2 to Samford Wednesday afternoon at the Earle Tennis Center.
"It is quite disappointing to come up short again in another conference match. The guys know the level we need to play and they are good enough, but we are inconsistent with our execution and our doubles were very poor today," said head coach
Chuck Kriese. "I take the blame for not working the team hard before the match to make sure that the intensity was right. We were flat and there is no excuse for that at the start of the match. That is my responsibility. All we can do is keep working hard. Give credit to Samford, they are a very well-coached team and they play hard the entire time. That is the standard that we want to get to in the conference."
Samford (6-7, 1-2 SoCon) swept through the doubles competition to earn the doubles point. At No. 1,
Jake Faundez and
Eduardo Lourido defeated
Noah Nawabi and
Gavin Stewart 6-0 with
Rossouw Norval and
Justin Ghavami besting
Matthew Henson and
Will Graham 6-2 at No. 2 doubles.
Aleksandar Petrovic and
Hugo Moreira claimed No. 3 doubles 6-0 over
Jack Pyritz and
Willem van Zyl.
In singles action, Stewart and
Roy Hobson each claimed wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles for the Bulldogs. Stewart bested
Max Rebol 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 5 singles while Hobson earned the win at No. 6 singles with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over
Austin Heinz.
For Samford, Faundez defeated Henson 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 and Lourido claimed No. 2 singles 6-1, 6-3 over Nawabi. At No. 3, Norval took the point 7-5, 6-1 over van Zyl and Petrovic rounded out the action with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Pyritz at No. 4 singles.
