CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel men's tennis team dropped a Southern Conference home match 7-0 to UNCG Sunday afternoon at the Earle Tennis Center.
"All the credit today goes to UNCG's team. They were ready to play and they had great sportsmanship," said head coach
Chuck Kriese. "We were leading most of our matches for most of the day, we just did not close and it's like missing free throws in the last minutes of a ball game. The team has not backed away from the fire, they are working hard. They have a sense of confidence that we will make it through this. It's all just part of the deal. I'm not disappointed at all in the guys' effort, confidence has to be earned through hard work, but also confidence has to be earned through having your heart broken enough times to where you figure out what to do at closing time."
The Spartans (9-9, 2-3 SoCon) swept the doubles competition with
Connor Thompson and
Nico Grewe defeating
Noah Nawabi and
Gavin Stewart 6-2 at No. 1.
Logan Walker and
Marcus Vidgren bested
Will Graham and
Matthew Henson 6-3 and
Ollie Palmer and
Jack Burkill claimed the No. 3 doubles match 6-4 over
Willem van Zyl and
Trey Davis.
In singles action, Thompson won in straight sets over Henson 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 while Palmer bested van Zyl 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2 singles. Vidgren claimed No. 3 with a 7-5, 7-5 win over Nawabi and Grewe bested Pyritz 6-4, 7-5 at No. 4. Stewart and
Roy Hobson each claimed the first set at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, but Stewart ultimately fell 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 to
Daniel Hammerstedt at No. 5 and Hobson ultimately relinquished the point at No. 6 singles 4-6 6-4, 6-1 at No. 6 to
