JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The Citadel scored the go-ahead touchdown with just over four minutes to play and the defense made a goal line stand as the Bulldogs escaped Johnson City with a 31-27 victory over ETSU.

How it Happened
- The Bucs got on the board first as they got a 59-yard touchdown pass from Trey Mitchell to Will Huzzie on the opening drive of the game.
- The Bulldogs answered back on their first possession as a Keyonte Sessions 20-yard run got The Citadel deep into Bucs territory. Brandon Rainey did the rest as he went over left guard for the one-yard touchdown.
- ETSU drove back into Bulldog territory before the defense held and forced a 35-yard field goal from Tyler Keltner.
- The Bucs extended their lead in the second quarter with a Keltner 21-yard field goa.
- The Citadel finally got back on the scoreboard late in the first half. A huge pass play from Rainey to Rashad Riley got the Bulldogs into Buc territory.
- After what they thought was a touchdown catch, Jacob Godek came on for a 21-yard field goal.
- ETSU took advantage of a short field to take a 20-10 lead on a Mitchell touchdown pass to Anthony Spagnoletti.
- The Citadel answered back in a quick way as Dante Smith broke free for 49 yards and Nkem Njoku took the hanoff on the next play and scored from five yards out.
- Mitchell's third touchdown pass of the game extended the lead back to 10 points in the fourth quarter.
- On the next drive, Raleigh Webb took a reverse and went 17 yards for a first down. Two plays later, Rainey found Remus Bulmer for a 16-yard completion inside the five.
- Rainey would cap off the drive with a one yard touchdown.
- ETSU would answer with a nine-play drive, but the Bulldog defense would stiffen at midfield and force a punt.
- The Citadel got the ball at its own 19 with 5:02 to play. Clay Harris nearly broke a long run on the first play.
- On the next play, Rainey found a wide open Webb down the center of the field for a 73-yard touchdown.
- ETSU had one last chance and used a big pass play of its own to get into the red-zone.
- After three-straight incompletions, the Bucs completed a pass near the goal line, but Chris Beverly stood up the receiver and Phil Barrett cleaned up the tackle to stop the receiver at the one yard line and secure the victory.
Inside the Numbers
- The Citadel rallied from 10-point deficits in the third and fourth quarters.
- The Bulldogs showed balance on offense by rushing for 229 yards and throwing for 154.
- Quarterback Brandon Rainey rushed for a pair of touchdowns and threw for another. It is the seventh game this season he has rushed and thrown for a touchdown in the same game.
- Rainey now has 16 rushing touchdowns and 10 passing touchdowns. He is just the second player in school history to have double digit rushing and passing touchdowns in a season, joining Harry Lynch (1971).
- Rainey finished the game with 40 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries. He was also 4-for-6 for 154 yards and a touchdown.
- Dante Smith led the rushing attack with 74 yards on eight carries.
- Nkem Njoku scored in third quarter. It was the second-straight game he has scored a touchdown.
- Webb caught two passes for 107 yards and a touchdown. The 73-yard touchdown reception was the second longest of the season, and fourth longest of his career.
- The 107 yards marked the third 100-yard receiving game on the season.
- Rashad Riley caught his first career pass, going for 31 yards.
- Willie Eubanks III led the defense with 11 tackles, including seven solo stops.
- Sean-Thomas Faulkner added 10 tackles.
- Chris Beverly finished with seven tackles, none bigger than the game-saving stop on fourth down.
- Destin Mack picked off his second pass of the season in the second quarter.
- The Bulldogs lined up in the wishbone on the first play from scrimmage in honor of former head coach Charlie Taaffe.
