CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel basketball team opens the 2019-20 season this Saturday, Nov. 9 with a 12 p.m. game against UNC Asheville. The game will mark the first meeting between the two teams in 31 years.
BOGO DEAL
Saturday's season opener at McAlister Field House will feature a BOGO deal where fans can purchase an adult ticket and receive a free children's ticket to the game.
MAKE 'EM MISS
All season long, if an opposing player misses two consecutive free throws in the same trip to the charity stripe, fans in attendance will receive a coupon for free food from Hubee D's!
OPENING THE SEASON AT HOME
Saturday marks the second time in three years that the Bulldogs will have opened the season at home. The 2017-18 team opened the campaign with a 109-73 victory over Oglethorpe at home. The last time the Bulldogs opened the season at home against an NCAA Division I opponent was the 2012-13 campaign. The Citadel defeated VMI 84-76 in the All-Military Classic held at McAlister Field House.
BAUCOM IN THE CITADEL RECORD BOOK
Head coach
Duggar Baucom's 45 wins rank tied for ninth in program history with Dick Campbell (1967-71). Baucom is just four wins behind
Ed Conroy (2006-10), seven behind
Benny Blatt (1926-30) and eight wins behind
C.F. Myers (1918-25). With 12 more wins, Baucom will break into the top five in program history for career wins.
A LOOK AT THE 2019-20 BULLDOGS
The Citadel returns seven letterwinners from last season's team. The Bulldogs brought in eight newcomers, including two graduate transfers and six freshmen. The squad will be made up of seven guards and eight forwards. The breakdown includes two graduate transfers, one senior, four juniors, two sophomores and six freshmen.
THE 2018-19 TEAM
The 2018-19 team's 8-7 record at home marked the first .500 or better home record since the 2016-17 team went 8-8 at home. It is the first time since the 2014-15 season that a team has finished above .500 at home. The 2018-19 Bulldogs went 8-3 in games against non-SoCon teams, marking the best out-of-conference record since the 2001-02 team also went 8-3 prior to opening up SoCon play. The Bulldogs started the year off 9-2 through the first 11 games, marking the best start since the 1979-80 team.
SETTING A SEASON RECORD
The Citadel's nine wins before the Christmas break set a program record. The previous record was seven set by the 1964-65 team and matched by the 2016-17 squad.
SETTING SINGLE GAME RECORDS
During the 2018-19 season, the Bulldogs set 10 single-game program records, including field goals made, 3-point field goals made, 3-point field goals attempted, defensive rebounds, total rebounds, blocked shots versus an NCAA Division I opponent, 3-pointers made in a regular-season SoCon game, blocks in a regular-season SoCon Game and 3-pointers attempted in a SoCon tournament game.
THE 2018-19 BULLDOGS IN THE SOCON
The Bulldogs ranked in the top five in the Southern Conference in eight statistical categories during the 2018-19 season. The Bulldogs led the conference in scoring average (85.1 ppg), free throw percentage (.736) and 3-pointers made (12.3 pg). The Citadel ranked third in the SoCon in offensive rebounding (10.7 orpg), defensive rebound (26.1 drpg) and assists (15.4 apg). The 'Dogs ranked fifth in the league in blocked shots (3.7 bpg) and turnover margin (+0.73).
LEADING THE NATION IN 3-POINTERS
Over the last four seasons (2015-19), The Citadel has been the top 3-point shooting team in the country, converting 1,516 treys over that span. That is 104 more than Marshall, the team with the second most 3-pointers over the same span.
LEADING THE NATION IN SCORING
Since the 2015-16 season, The Citadel has led the nation with an average of 85.9 points per game. Marshall is second with 83.9 points per contest.
THE HISTORY WITH UNC ASHEVILLE
Saturday will mark just the fourth meeting between The Citadel and UNC Asheville on the hardwood. The Citadel Bulldogs hold a 2-1 advantage over the Asheville Bulldogs, including a perfect 2-0 mark in Charleston. The last meeting came back during the 1988-89 season with The Citadel claiming a 93-77 victory in Charleston.
SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS FROM ASHEVILLE
UNC Asheville opened the 2019-20 season on Tuesday, Nov. 5 with a 78-63 loss at Tennessee. The Bulldogs hosted Bob Jones in an exhibition back on Oct. 31, winning 91-70. Last season, Asheville went 4-27 in head coach
Mike Morrell's first season after taking over for
Nick McDevitt who moved on to Middle Tennessee State after 17 years at UNC Asheville, including five as the head coach. UNC Asheville returns nine letterwinners from the 2018-19 roster, including four starters. The Bulldogs brought in five newcomers.
ASHEVILLE INDIVIDUALLY
Last season, UNC Asheville was led by
DeVon Baker's 16.1 points and 33.9 minutes per game and
Tajion Jones' 10.2 points and 31.7 minutes per outing. Both are sophomores this season and have returned to the starting five for Morrell. In Tuesday's season opener at Tennessee, Baker scored seven points and corralled in four rebounds in 30 minutes of play, while Jones played 29 minutes. Prior to the season, Baker was named to the Preseason All-Big South Team. The Bulldogs' starting five figures to be all sophomores in Baker, Jones,
Lavar Batts, Jr.,
LJ Thorpe and
Coty Jude. Thorpe led UNC Asheville at Tennessee with 22 points off 9-of-13 shooting from the field and Batts added 11 points. Jude led the team last season with 68 made 3-pointers.
COMING UP
After opening the season at home against UNC Asheville, the Bulldogs will hit the road for the first time this season, traveling to face their second straight opposing Bulldog team in Georgia. The Citadel and UGA will tip off at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 12 in Athens.
CLEAR BAG POLICY
Fans attending ticketed athletic events at The Citadel this year are reminded of the new clear bag policy that has been implemented. Under the policy, fans will be allowed to bring with them a clear plastic, vinyl or PVC bag that does not exceed 12 inches by 6 inches by 12 inches, or a one-gallon plastic bag (such as Ziploc or Hefty bags).
