Bulldog Soccer Enjoys Fun Outing with Spirit United Soccer

CHARLESTON, S.C. – There were plenty of smiles to go around Saturday morning as The Citadel women's soccer team spent part of the morning at the soccer fields of Patriots Point working with several members of Spirit United Soccer, a partner of Special Olympics.
"We always appreciate the opportunity to get out and connect with those in our local community," said head coach Ciaran Traquair. "Our cadet-athletes get a lot out of working with the kids and building relationships with them through the game of soccer. I am thankful we can continue this relationship and engage with our local fans."
The morning started off with some knocking the ball around followed by a light stretch as each member of Spirit United offered up their favorite pregame stretch.

Once everyone was good and loose, the real fun of drills began. The members of Spirit United showed off their dribbling skills by playing a couple fun games, "Red Light, Green Light" and "Sharks and Minnows."

After a water break for Bulldogs and Spirit United players alike, the Spirit United players took shots on goal to get good and fired up. With members of the Bulldogs' team in goal, the United Soccer players took shot after shot, scorching the net.

The large group then divided into two teams for a little friendly competition. Some took the game a little more to heart than others, but once the final whistle blew, everyone was smiling and laughing, and a few dance moves were broken out.

"We all had so much fun working with Spirit United this morning," said freshman Ani Ford. "It was really great to get out there, meet new people and help them get better at the sport we all love to play so much. Plus, the dance battle at the end was unreal, everyone had such awesome moves, even if it took them a little while to warm up to the idea."
The Citadel women's soccer team will look to continue the current seven-game homestand this weekend with a Sunday matinee against Presbyterian. The Bulldogs and Blue Hose will kick off at 1 p.m.
