CHARLESTON, S.C. – Facing a quick turnaround following its road setback at VMI on Saturday afternoon, The Citadel will close out its two-game road swing at UNCG inside Greensboro Coliseum on Monday evening at 7 p.m.
Monday's game will be broadcast
live on ESPN+ from Greensboro Coliseum and will be carried
on the radio locally via 102.1FM and 1450AM. The Voice of the Bulldogs, Luke Mauro, will have the radio call.
In their last time out, the Bulldogs (8-2, 1-2 SoCon) could not overcome a hot-shooting VMI squad on the road, dropping a 110-103 decision against the Keydets.
Kaiden Rice notched a season-best 29 points on 7-of-10 shooting from beyond the arc, but VMI's Jake Stephens (33), Greg Parham (27) and Sean Conway (25) all hit the 20-point mark as the Keydets led for the entire second half in the victory.
Rice enters Monday's matchup at UNCG with 991 career points and will be seeking to become the 35th member of The Citadel's 1,000-point club. If Rice reaches that mark on Monday, he will be the first new player to join the club since his former teammate
Matt Frierson during the 2018-19 campaign.
Duggar Baucom has coached three of the 34 members of the 1,000-point club during his tenure with the Bulldogs as Frierson,
Zane Najdawi and
Brian White have each joined since 2015-16.
Despite the loss on Saturday, The Citadel broke the 100-point barrier for the third time this season after previously hitting the mark against Toccoa Falls and Carver. The 'Dogs' 103 points were the team's most against a SoCon opponent since also scoring 103 against Samford on Feb. 10, 2018, nearly three years ago. For the season, The Citadel is now averaging 93.3 points per game, a mark that trails only No. 1 Gonzaga for the highest-scoring offense in the nation.
After an off night from three-point range against Furman last Wednesday, The Citadel returned to its sharpshooting ways against the Keydets, knocking down 13-of-28 shots (46.4 percent) from beyond the arc on Saturday. Rice leads all Division I players with 5.1 three-pointers made per game, and the senior ranks second in the SoCon and 23rd nationally by shooting at a 45.5 percent clip (51-of-112) from three-point range.
As a team, the 'Dogs remain the nation's leader in three-point makes per game (14.1) and trail only Fort Wayne in three-point percentage (43.1 percent) among teams that have played multiple games. Six different players for The Citadel are shooting 40 percent or better from beyond the arc this season.
UNCG (8-5, 3-2 SoCon), the coaches' preseason pick to win the league championship, began conference play 1-2 with losses to ETSU and Wofford before coming out strong on a two-game road swing at Samford on Thursday and Saturday. The Spartans won both games against Samford by double digits, keyed by big performances from Preseason SoCon Player of the Year Isaiah Miller who finished with 38 points, 15 rebounds and seven assists across the two games.
Miller paces the Spartans with 18 points per game and has dealt a team-best 48 assists, but the senior has also committed 44 turnovers this season; defensively, Miller leads all SoCon players with 2.1 steals per game and is UNCG's leading rebounder, hauling in 6.7 boards per night.
Hayden Koval is a lethal shot blocker for the Spartans, swatting away 3.08 shots per game to lead the league and rank seventh in the country in that category. Although no other Spartan scores in double figures besides Miller, UNCG sports eight players scoring at least six points per game with its well-balanced roster.
Monday's meeting will be just the 40th all-time between the Spartans and the Bulldogs, with UNCG holding a 30-9 edge in the series. The Citadel will be looking to snap a 13-game losing streak against the Spartans, having last won in the series on Jan. 5, 2015, in an 85-83 overtime decision.
The Citadel will face a packed week following Monday's game. First, the Bulldogs will return home to McAlister Field House on Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. for a clash against Mercer before going back out on the road for the third time in four games to face Samford next Saturday at 3 p.m. With the conclusion of that road trip, the 'Dogs will have played four games over the last seven days, with three coming on the road.
