CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel will seek to bounce back from last Saturday's narrow loss at Chattanooga as the Bulldogs aim for a season sweep at Wofford on Wednesday evening at 7 p.m.
Wednesday's game will be broadcast live on ESPN+ from inside Richardson Indoor Stadium. The game will also be carried on the radio locally on 102.1FM and 1450AM with Luke Mauro, the Voice of the Bulldogs, on the radio call.
The Bulldogs (11-8, 4-8 SoCon) twice rallied from double-digit deficits at Chattanooga in their last time out last Saturday but came up just short against the Mocs in a 70-66 decision. Chattanooga led by as many as 13 points in the first half and by 11 points in the second, but The Citadel went into the final seconds with an opportunity to tie the game on its final possession.
Hayden Brown's final shot hit the front iron and bounced out, however, to seal the Mocs' win; Brown finished with a double-double of 13 points and 15 rebounds, and
Kaiden Rice added a game-high 22 points after hitting six three-pointers.
Brown was named the SoCon Player of the Week for the second time this season on Tuesday afternoon, becoming the first Bulldog to win the award twice in a single season since Lew Stallworth in 2018-19. A top candidate for SoCon Player of the Year, Brown remains the league's leader in scoring (20.2) and rebounding (11.0) this season.
Normally known for its offensive prowess, The Citadel has been strong at swatting away shots this season, leading the SoCon and ranking 20th nationally with 4.9 blocks per game. The 10 blocked shots against ETSU on Feb. 10 were the fourth-most in a single game in program history.
Stephen Clark, who had four blocks against ETSU, currently ranks second among SoCon players with 2.1 blocks per game, a mark that has him ranked 34th among all Division I players.
With 11 double-doubles this season, Brown has already moved into sole possession of third place on The Citadel's all-time single-season list in the category. Brown is on pace to become the first Bulldog to average a double-double since John Sutor in the 1970-71 campaign. Across his 11 double-doubles, Brown is averaging 21.9 points and 14.2 rebounds.
The Citadel has enjoyed a strong run as of late in rebounding, including outrebounding ETSU by a 41-38 margin last Wednesday evening. Eight of those rebounds came off the offensive glass, continuing a strong run in that category for the 'Dogs; The Citadel has averaged 9.0 offensive rebounds per game over its last 11 outings, with at least six pulled down in each contest.
After going winless in conference play last season, The Citadel has already picked up four victories in 2020-21, easily the biggest improvement among SoCon teams. Across the nation, only Cleveland State (7 more wins), Evansville (6) and Morehead State (5) have improved their conference win totals more than the Bulldogs.
Senior guard Storm Murphy stars for Wofford (12-8, 9-5 SoCon), scoring 17.7 points and dishing out 4.3 assists per game; Murphy has eight 20-point games this season but has hit that mark just once in his last seven outings. Tray Hollowell (11.7) is the only other Terrier scoring in double figures this season, with Morgan Safford just under that mark with 9.1 per game.
Wofford has won just one of its last four games and has lost each of its last two games by double digits, falling 78-66 to Chattanooga last Wednesday and dropping a 71-49 decision at ETSU on Saturday.
A rivalry that dates back to the 1920s, The Citadel and Wofford will be meeting for the 112th time in program history, with the Terriers holding a 61-50 advantage. The Bulldogs claimed the first meeting between the two sides this season with a 77-69 upset in Charleston on Jan. 27, and Wednesday's bout offers The Citadel the opportunity to claim its first-ever season sweep of the Terriers, who became a member of the SoCon prior to the 1997-98 campaign.
The Citadel will return home for its next-to-last home game of the season on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m., squaring off against archrival VMI inside McAlister Field House. The Keydets claimed the first meeting earlier this season in Lexington, coming away with a 110-103 victory on Jan. 16; The Citadel will be looking to snap a four-game losing streak in the series, last getting a win over VMI on Jan. 26, 2019.
