CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel will round out its three-game homestand on Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. as the Bulldogs welcome ETSU inside McAlister Field House in a Southern Conference battle, seeking a split of the season series against the Bucs.
Wednesday's game is Cadet Appreciation Night presented by the South Carolina Education Lottery and will be broadcast live on ESPN+ with Kyle West and Jason Kempf on the call. The game will also be carried on the radio locally on 102.1FM and 1450AM with Luke Mauro, the Voice of the Bulldogs, on the radio call.
The Bulldogs (10-7, 3-7 SoCon) exacted revenge against Western Carolina in their last time out, knocking off the Catamounts, 74-63, last Saturday afternoon just five days after dropping a heartbreaker on the road in Cullowhee. The Citadel never trailed in Saturday's game and was led by a 21-point, 15-rebound double-double from
Hayden Brown.
Kaiden Rice knocked down five three-pointers and finished with 19 points,
Tyler Moffe had 14 points and dished out 10 assists and
Derek Webster, Jr., was a spark off the bench, scoring 12 points with five rebounds and two assists.
After allowing its last three opponents to shoot better than 50 percent in the second half, The Citadel limited Western Carolina to 13-of-28 shooting (46.4 percent) over the final 20 minutes to help secure the victory. Perimeter defense was also key for the Bulldogs as the Catamounts converted only four of their 22 three-point attempts (18.2 percent) on the day.
Normally known as an offensive threat, The Citadel leads the SoCon in blocks per game this season with 4.7 swats, a mark that also ranks 31st among all Division I teams.
Stephen Clark leads the way on the defensive end for the Bulldogs, ranking second in the SoCon and 34th among all players with two blocks per contest.
With nine double-doubles this season, Brown has already moved into a tie for fourth place on The Citadel's all-time single-season list in the category. The redshirt junior is on pace to become the first Bulldog to average a double-double since John Sutor in the 1970-71 campaign and also remains the SoCon leader in both scoring (20.6) and rebounding (10.7) this season. Across his nine double-doubles, Brown is averaging 23 points and 14.3 boards.
The Citadel has enjoyed a strong run as of late in rebounding, including outrebounding Western Carolina by a 37-35 margin on Saturday afternoon. Eight of those rebounds came off the offensive glass, continuing a strong run in that category for the 'Dogs; The Citadel has averaged 9.1 offensive rebounds per game over its last nine outings, with at least six pulled down in each contest.
Ledarrius Brewer (15.4), Damari Monsanto (13.3) and David Sloan (10.6) all average double figures in scoring for ETSU (11-7, 7-3 SoCon), with Monsanto doubling as the team's leading rebounder at a 7.7 per game clip; Sloan has dished out a team-high 75 assists.
In their last time out, the Bucs trailed for nearly the entire game against Chattanooga before staging a late rally, taking a 65-64 lead on Ty Brewer's triple with 11 seconds remaining. At the buzzer, however, Chattanooga's A.J. Caldwell knocked down a three-pointer of his own to pull off the 67-65 upset in Johnson City last Saturday.
SoCon rivals since the 1979-80 season, Wednesday's meeting will be the 66th in program history between the Bulldogs and the Bucs. ETSU holds a 48-17 advantage, a mark that includes a 16-10 record in games played in Charleston. The Citadel will be eyeing its first win in the series since an 84-82 triumph on the road on Feb. 20, 2018; since then, the Bucs have claimed the five most recent meetings, including a 112-84 victory on Jan. 30 earlier this season.
With its three-game homestand in the rearview window, The Citadel will head back on the road for the first time since Feb. 1 as the Bulldogs make the trek north to face Chattanooga on Saturday afternoon at Noon. The Citadel took down the Mocs in its SoCon opener on Jan. 9, claiming a 92-87 victory inside McAlister Field House behind a 37-point, 13-rebound performance from
Hayden Brown.
