How It Happened
  • The Citadel came out firing with a pair of shots on goal in the first six minutes. Both Leanne Bryant and Maria Contreras were able to turn shots toward goal, but Western Carolina's Melody Mezzina turned away both early chances.
  • After relieving Kaeley Johnston in goal, Jess Newton made two saves in the final 15 minutes of the half to preserve the deadlock. Newton parried away Regan Ward's chance in the 31st minute before shutting down Payton Creed at the 42:28 mark to keep the Catamounts scoreless through the halftime break.
  • Just over three minutes into the second half, Western Carolina drew a penalty kick off a foul in the box, and Rea Syska converted the chance to give the Catamounts a 1-0 edge.
  • The Citadel mounted offensive pressure over the next 10 minutes with a trio of shots but was unable to put any of the chances on goal. Rachel Posner's shot from distance in the 60th minute was the Bulldogs' best effort, sailing just high over the crossbar.
  • At the 79:54 mark, Megan McLaughlin fired a cross into the box that found Suzuka Yosue, and the sophomore brough the ball down to the foot of Ellie Burgess, who fired past Mezzina to tie the match at 1-1.
  • Late in the first overtime frame, The Citadel earned a penalty kick and Contreras stepped up to the spot, but Mezzina made the save to extend the match.
  • Neither side had a strong chance in the second overtime as the Bulldogs settled for the 1-1 draw in their finale.

Inside the Numbers
  • Nine seniors; Kaeley Johnston, Hannah Roth, Taylor Diggs, Maria Contreras, Ellie Burgess, Rachel Posner, Kate Manzione, Devyn Nyhart and Logan Dix; were honored in a prematch ceremony on Saturday afternoon.
  • Johnston made her first start in goal since Sept. 7, 2018, as she played the first 17:57 on Saturday.
  • Burgess' goal was her third of the season and first since netting a pair in the season opener against Anderson on Feb. 14.
  • The Citadel finishes its 2020-21 campaign with a 7-9-3 overall record; the seven victories are tied for the third-most in a single season in school history alongside the 2014 season.
  • The Bulldogs earned a point against Western Carolina for just the third time in its 20th opportunity. Saturday's draw was The Citadel's first positive result against the Catamounts since 2010.
