CHARLESTON, S.C. – A Charlotte breakaway goal in the 20
th minute was the only scoring in an otherwise defensive, physical battle at WLI Field on Sunday afternoon as The Citadel fell 1-0 in non-conference action.
How It Happened:
7' –
Samantha Grantham threatened early as her shot from the left wing deflected off the crossbar.
20' – After a 49ers free kick, a Bulldogs defender had the ball stolen away in their defensive third, leading to a CLT breakaway goal to put the visitors up 1-0.
41' –
Nicoletta Anuci's attempt to the bottom, right was saved by the 49ers goalkeeper as we headed to the half with just a combined three shots on frame.
72' – CLT looked for an insurance goal as a cross into the box was struck just wide of the net to keep it a one-goal game
82' – The Bulldogs had a corner kick with less than 10 minutes to go but were unable to get a shot off as they searched for the equalizer in the waning moments.
83' –
Nora Sampson came up with the save of the game as a through ball left a 49ers attacker one-on-one around the 12 yard mark but the Bulldogs goalie shut the door to keep her team in it.
86' – CIT got off another deep shot with under five minutes remaining, but CLT sank into a defensive formation to stave off the Bulldogs' pressure and close out the road win.
