Despite ranking as the 16th-best first baseman in the nation coming out of high school, Swauger brought his talent to The Citadel baseball program between 2005-08, finishing his career with the Bulldogs as only the second player in school history to record 300-plus hits. He also left Charleston with the school record in triples (16), ranked second in doubles (71) and third in both runs scored (211) and home runs (38).

A three-time All-Southern Conference selection, Swauger primarily held down first base or played in the outfield for The Citadel, eventually entering the St. Louis Cardinals organization via the 26th Round of the MLB Draft. He competed in the minor leagues between 2008-14 before moving into a staff role, taking over as the manager of the Peoria Chiefs in 2017.
