AUDIO | VIDEO | GAME NOTES | LIVE STATSCHARLESTON, S.C. - The Citadel basketball team returns to action this weekend after a nine-day break for exams when it heads to Blacksburg, Va., to take on Virginia Tech on Saturday at 1 p.m.
The game, which is being broadcast on
ESPN3 with Andrew Allegretta and Mack McCarthy calling the action, rekindles a former Southern Conference rivalry that has been dormant since Feb. 16, 1966.
The Bulldogs (4-5) are in search of a victory against an NCAA power conference opponent for the first time since they downed South Carolina, 88-87, in the 1988-89 campaign. The Citadel is also looking to snap a 17-game losing skid on an opponents' home floor that began on Feb. 23, 2013 at Presbyterian.
Through three December games, the Dogs are led by
Ashton Moore (14 ppg),
P.J. Horgan (13.3) and
Jake Wright (12.0). Moore, who recently joined the 1,000-point club at The Citadel, has knocked down the most free throws (10-of-12) in that span.
Meanwhile, Horgan has posted the best field goal percentage (17-29, 58.6%) while leading the team in total rebounds (24) and blocks (nine). Wright has contributed 36 points, all in reserve, by virtue of hitting 9-of-15 (60%) from 3-point range.
Virginia Tech (5-4) is led offensively by the trio of Justin Bibbs (12.2 ppg), Adam Smith (12.1) and Joey van Zegeren (10.4). The Hokies are 4-2 at Cassell Coliseum this season including a recent 65-55 victory over Alabama A&M on Dec. 14.
Along with the
ESPN3 broadcast the game can be heard on
Sportsradio 1450 with play-by-play announcer Mike Legg making the call for the Bulldogs.
Prior to The Citadel's game with Bethune-Cookman on Tuesday, Dec. 30, the cheerleading squad will host a free Cheer Clinic. The clinic is open to children ages 6-12 and will take place at McAlister Field House from 5-6:30 p.m. For more information or to enroll in the clinic, visit
