The meeting with VMI, the second of three this season with the Keydets (7-13, 3-6 SoCon), marks the 12
th time in The Citadel's basketball history that the Dogs (8-11, 3-5 SoCon) will play the same opponent at least three times as part of the regular season schedule.
The previous meeting took place in West Point, N.Y., at the All-Military Classic to open the 2014-15 campaign. VMI snatched a 66-65 victory over The Citadel in that contest behind a 25-point effort from QJ Peterson.
Trailing 65-63 with 34 seconds remaining, VMI was awarded possession following an official review on a turnover by
Quinton Marshall. The Keydets took advantage of the call when Peterson found Trey Chapman for a 3-pointer that gave VMI the one-point lead.
The Citadel had an opportunity to win the game, but
Ashton Moore missed a jumper as time expired. The victory allowed VMI to collect consecutive wins over The Citadel for the first time since it rattle off four-straight from 2000-02 as a member of the Southern Conference.
The Dogs are looking to end a two-game losing streak that includes setbacks to Furman and East Tennessee State. They are led offensively by the duo of
Ashton Moore (17.9 ppg) and
P.J. Horgan (13.1). Horgan is also instrumental on the glass with 6.4 rpg.
VMI is 2-2 in its last four contests, dropping games at UNCG and Chattanooga in the last nine days. The loss to the Mocs can be attributed to the loss of Peterson who was placed on medical furlough and not attending the school at this time.
The game can be seen live on the Southern Conference Digital Network and can be heard on Fox Radio Sports 1450 with play-by-play announcer Mike Legg making the call for the Bulldogs.
The Citadel returns home on Feb. 5 to take on Mercer and quickly follows with a meeting against UNCG two days later. In that homestand Bulldog fans are encouraged to participate by donating non-perishable items at the games as part of the SoCon Hoops Against Hunger initiative.
Hoops Against Hunger, in partnership with the Brad Daugherty Foundation, brings together the basketball community along with public, private, and sports organizations as well as local and national sponsors to help provide meals for students who may not have enough to eat at home during the extended holiday breaks from school.
