VMI Posts 84-69 Victory at McAlister

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Tim Marshall posted a career-high 26 points and Brian Brown added 20 as VMI emerged with an 84-69 victory over The Citadel at McAlister Field House on Sunday evening. The Keydets managed to stave off a solid defensive effort by the Bulldogs as well as the 4,248 in attendance as part of the "Pack the Mac" promotion.
 
Marshall, who finished 9-of-21 from the floor and posted a career-high eight 3-pointers, was one of four Keydets (10-15, 5-9 SoCon) to reach double figures. Brown added 20 points after hitting 7-of-12 from the field and knocking down six treys along with a team-high four assists.
 
VMI's second half surge was capped off by a 20-of-37 (54.1%) outing from the floor, which included nine conversions from beyond the arc. The biggest difference for the Keydets came on the offensive glass where they snagged rebounds in eight of 17 missed attempts.
 
The Citadel (9-16, 4-10 SoCon) extended a four-point halftime lead to 46-35 by the 17:41 mark of the second half. The Bulldogs took advantage of two Jake Wright in that stretch and capped off a 22-3 run that took 6:29 off the clock.
 
VMI retaliated with a series of treys by Brown, Marshall and Julian Eleby to pull within five, 54-49, with 12:57 remaining.
 
The Keydets continued to find their rhythm from beyond the arc as Brown and Marshall drove home a series of 3-pointers to forge VMI back in front 55-54 just over a minute later.
 
VMI eventually moved in front by six, following a layup by Trey Chapman and a 3-pointer from Brown, but three points from Brian White and a layup by Ashton Moore pulled The Citadel within one, 60-59.
 
Marshall answered with back-to-back 3-pointers for VMI, sparking a 16-5 Keydet run that took 4:28 off the clock and stretched the lead to 76-64.
 
The Bulldogs were unable to pull back within double figures as VMI completed the regular season sweep with a 15-point win.
 
Moore led all Citadel players with 19 points as he finished 7-of-13 from the field and tied his season-high in assists (six). The senior guard hit two from long distance as he became the sixth player in program history with 200 3-pointers in their career.
 
Also reaching double figures for the Cadets were Quinton Marshall (14), Wright (12 points) and Brian White (10). White crashed the boards for six rebounds while Moore and Wright added four as The Citadel posted 33 rebounds (25 defensive).
 
The Bulldogs, who finished 13-of-25 (52%) in the second half, were 23-of-49 (46.9%) from the field for the game. They also took advantage of a solid night (17-20, 85%) from the free throw line.
 
VMI's offensive attack not only included Brown and Marshall, but also the tandem of Phillip Anglade (17 points) and Trey Chapman (10). The Keydets finished 31-of-71 (43.7%) from the floor, hitting 15-of-41 (36.6%) from 3-point range.
 
The combination of Anglade and Eleby hauled in seven rebounds each as VMI finished with a 35-33 edge in rebounds. That included 16 rebounds on the offensive glass for the Keydets.
 
The Bulldogs, who trailed by as many 10 points during the course of the first half, closed out the final 4:10 of the half on a 12-0 run.
 
Trailing 32-24 following a layup by Anglade, The Citadel responded with a 3-pointer by Moore and a jumper from the top of the key by Marshall to trim the deficit to three.
 
After a failed opportunity for the Keydets offensively, The Citadel responded with a 3-pointer by Bray, follow a pass from Moore, to draw the game even at 32-all.
 
The Dogs continued their solid defensive effort and followed with a free throw by Marshall and a layup by Bray to take a four-point lead into the intermission.
 
The Citadel capped off the first half by hitting 10-of-24 from the floor, converting four from 3-point range, and were successful on 12-of-13 (92.3%) from the line due to nine Keydet fouls.
 
The Bulldogs complete their regular season Southern Conference road swing this weekend when they head to the Upstate to face Furman (Feb. 19) and Wofford (Feb. 21).
