Moore, Horgan Highlight Overtime Win at Furman

Box Score
GREENVILLE, S.C. – Ashton Moore scored a team-high 20 points and P.J. Horgan added 15 as The Citadel captured its third Southern Conference road victory of the season with a 62-56 overtime win over archrival Furman at Timmons Arena on Thursday evening.

Knotted at 42-all with 5:01 remaining in regulation, following a three-point play by Horgan, The Citadel (10-16, 5-10 SoCon) defense forced a turnover and allowed Moore to convert a pair of free throws on the offensive end. After another missed opportunity by the Paladins, the senior guard answered by knocking down a jumper from the right elbow as the Dogs moved in front 46-42.

Furman (7-19, 4-11 SoCon) responded with conversions by Devin Sibley and Stephen Croone to force the ninth tie of the contest, 46-46.

Moore continued to be the go-to player for the Dogs down the stretch, hitting a jumper from 18-feet away to break the tie, but the Paladins managed a layup by Croone with 25 seconds left to send the game into overtime.

The Citadel scored seven unanswered in the first 2:17 of the ninth overtime session in the storied rivalry, taking advantage of a jumper by Horgan and a 3-pointer by Moore to establish a 55-48 advantage.

Furman again turned to the combination of Croone and Simbley, pulling within six, 57-51, but it was key free throws down the stretch by Warren Sledge, Jake Wright and Moore that provided the Dogs with their 29th all-time victory in Greenville.

The senior tandem of Moore and Horgan were joined in double figures by Brian White, who closed with 10 points. Horgan topped the double figure plateau for the 17th time this season by knocking down 6-of-8 from the field and 3-of-6 at the charity stripe. White was a perfect 4-of-4 from the floor and knocked down his only two attempts at the free throw line.

C.J. Bray provided the Bulldogs with a lift off the bench, hauling in a game-high nine rebounds to go along with five points and two steals. He was instrumental in giving The Citadel a 31-26 edge on the glass.

The Bulldogs finished 21-of-37 (56.8%) from the floor, the 10th time this season hitting over 50 percent, and were successful on 16-of-24 at the charity stripe.

Furman's offense was highlighted by the backcourt of Croone (23 points) and Daniel Fowler (12). Croone, who finished 9-of-18 from the floor, was one away from tying his season-high in field goals. Meanwhile, Fowler led the Paladins in 3-pointers (three) as he topped double digits for the ninth time in 2014-15.

The Bulldogs became the fourth different SoCon team to hold the Paladins under 40 percent from the field as Furman managed just 20-of-53 (37.7%) in the contest.

The Citadel entered the intermission with a lead for the fourth straight contest after hitting 10-of-15 (66.7%) from the floor. The Bulldogs capitalized on 10 points in the paint, including eight off the hand of White.

After falling into an early 8-5 hole, The Citadel responded by scoring 12 of the next 21 points to bring the score to a 17-all tie on a layup by White.

Solid defense on the Paladins coupled with a series of scores by White and Moore moved the Dogs in front 21-20 with 4:26 left. The Dogs allowed just one Paladin bucket over the remainder of the half and capitalized on a 3-pointer by C.J. Bray and a pair of Quinton Marshall free throws to assume a 26-23 lead.

The Bulldogs complete their regular season Southern Conference road swing this weekend when they head to the Upstate to face Wofford on Saturday evening at 7 p.m.
