Bulldogs Close Regular Season at UNCG, VMI

ESPN3 | SPORTS RADIO 1450 AM | LIVE STATS UNCG | LIVE STATS VMI | GAME NOTES

CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Citadel basketball team finishes its regular season slate with one final road trip to UNCG at 7 p.m. Thursday and VMI at 1 p.m. Saturday. The Bulldogs seek to split their season series with UNCG and earn a sweep over VMI this week. Both contests are set to air on ESPN3 and Sports Radio 1450 AM.

Each of The Citadel's first meetings with UNCG and VMI this season were decided by seven points or less. The Spartans prevailed 102-95 on Jan. 28 behind Kayel Locke's 30 points. Six Bulldogs scored in double figures led by Quinton Marshall and Derrick Henry, who both poured in 20 points, but a late UNCG run prevented a comeback.

Two days later, The Citadel edged VMI 78-75. Henry and P.J. Boutte scored the Bulldogs' final six points and propelled their team to a clutch victory. The win snapped a four-game losing streak vs. the Keydets as Duggar Baucom has won his last five games as a head coach in the rivalry. The last time the Bulldogs won two consecutive contests over VMI was in 2002.

Following the road trip, the Bulldogs prepare for the 2016 Southern Conference Tournament in Asheville, North Carolina, which runs March 4-7. Tickets are available through The Citadel ticket office. To purchase, call 843-953-DOGS or visit the McAlister Field House box office in person. For all the latest on The Citadel basketball, follow @CitadelHoops and stay tuned to CitadelSports.com.

NOTES
• With eight assists on Saturday, P.J. Boutte has recorded five or more assists in a game 15 times this season.
• During the past three games, a trio of freshmen has stepped up to provide a punch for The Citadel. Zane Najdawi, Quayson Williams and Connor Schroeder are averaging a combined 27.3 PPG, 11.6 RPG and four 3PFG per game. Najdawi has also added four blocked shots per outing in that stretch.
• The Citadel's blistering pace causes a nation-high 83.8 possessions per game, which naturally leads to more scoring for opponents. It doesn't prevent the Bulldogs from attacking defensively, as they are forcing 17.6 turnovers per game (4th in NCAA, 1st in SoCon).
• In 11 of 16 SoCon games this season, The Citadel has forced opponents to commit more turnovers than their season average. In all 11 of those games, SoCon opponents committed at least 15 turnovers.
• Over the last three weeks of action, The Citadel has set four different program records. As a team, The Citadel broke records for three-pointers made in a season (331), points scored in a season (2,526) and steals in a season (270). The Bulldogs need just two more shots to go down to snap the record for field goals made in a season.
• Najdawi also set a new program mark for blocked shots in a season by a freshman with 59 swats. He is only the second player in Bulldogs history to tally more than 50 blocks in a season. In conference play, Najdawi leads the SoCon in BPG with 2.4 and total blocks with 38.
• Najdawi collected a career-high six blocked shots vs. ETSU, becoming the ninth Bulldog to ever record that many in a single game. It was the most blocks by a Bulldog in a contest since P.J. Horgan in 2014.
• The Citadel's five freshmen have racked up 29 combined double-digit performances. None of them average more than 19 minutes per game.
• Williams' 59 three-pointers are already the fourth-most treys made by a freshman in a season in program history.
• The Citadel is responsible for five of the top six single-game three-point performances in the SoCon as a team this season, racking up 16 treys five different times in 2015-16. The Dogs rank first in the league in three-pointers made per game and third in the NCAA with 11.4.
• The Citadel made at least 10 triples in a game just three times last season. They've done that on 19 total occasions during the current campaign and 10 times in 16 SoCon games.
• Junior Warren Sledge has made a three-pointer in 25 of his last 26 games. He made just 20 combined triples during his freshman and sophomore seasons. Sledge leads the Dogs in total made threes (60) and three-point field goal percentage (38.2%).
• Boutte has four double-digit assist games this year. No other player in the SoCon has more than one double-digit assist game.
• Boutte has dished out 163 total assists through 29 games, which leads the SoCon. His 5.6 assists per outing ranks 32nd among all Division I players. Boutte's 163 dimes move him in to sole possession of second on the program's all-time single-season assists list.
• Senior Derrick Henry ranks second in the SoCon in 20-point games and ranks 5th in the league in scoring with 16.3 PPG.
• Henry now has 955 career points. He'll need to average 15 points over the final three guaranteed games to become The Citadel's 32nd 1000-point scorer. He scored 482 total points at Winthrop and has already scored 473 points in less than one full season as a Bulldog.
• The senior has a knack for getting to the line, where he's shooting 79.6 percent (15th in the SoCon). His 156 total made free throws are the fifth-most ever in a single season in program history.
