CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel men's basketball team will close out the current three-game road swing this week with contests at James Madison on Tuesday, Nov. 20 and South Florida on Saturday, Nov. 24. The game against the Dukes will tip off at 7 p.m., while the contest with the Bulls is slated for 2 p.m.
THE STREAK CONTINUES
Matt Frierson extended his current streak to 43 straight games with at least one 3-pointer made. The last time the senior guard failed to convert at least one 3-pointer was Saturday, Feb. 11, 2017 at VMI. The four 3-pointers Friday night at Texas marked the 28th time in his career that Frierson has converted at least four treys. He now has 243 career treys made, a mark that moves him up into a tie for third all-time in program history with
Austin Dahn (2007-11).
FRIERSON NATIONALLY
Frierson enters the week second in the nation for 3-pointers made per game with an average of 5.75. He is second only to Northern Colorado's
Trent Harris, who averages 7.50 treys per game, but has only played in two contests.
STALLWORTH NATIONALLY
Lew Stallworth enters the week tied for 31st nationally with an average of 6.3 assists per contest.
CHASING 1,000
Frierson and
Quayson Williams are both closing in on 1,000 career points. Frierson currently has 858 career points, while Williams has 786 career points. Thirty-three Bulldogs have scored 1,000 career points in the history of the program.
100 GAMES
Frierson and
Zane Najdawi both played in their 100th career games at The Citadel on Friday against Texas. They are the 59th and 60th players in program history to have played at least 100 games at The Citadel.
INSIDE THE HISTORY WITH JMU
The Bulldogs are 2-3 all-time against the Bulldogs. Both of The Citadel's wins came in Charleston, including an 84-82 win last season on Dec. 5, 2017.
SCOUTING THE DUKES
So far this season, the Dukes are 4-0 with wins over Eastern Mennonite, East Carolina, Bridgewater and Charlotte. The Dukes are 2-0 at home and averaging 84 points per game at home, while holding their opponents to 58.5 points per game. JMU brought back four starters from last season, as well as six other players who saw action. Sophomore
Darius Banks, who averaged 10.2 points and 4.2 rebounds per game last season, has averaged 19.3 points and 6.5 boards through the first four games. He is shooting 61 percent from the field.
Stuckey Mosley and
Matt Lewis are second and third on the team in scoring. Mosley averages 13.5 points per game while Lewis averages 10.5 points per contest. Banks leads the team with 15 steals and has hit 20 of his team-leading 23 free throws attempt.
THE LAST TIME AGAINST JMU (W, 84-82, 12/5/2017)
The Citadel men's basketball team picked up a big come-from-behind, 84-82 win over James Madison inside McAlister Field House as
Frankie Johnson and
Kaelon Harris drilled a pair of 3-pointers, and the Bulldog defense came up with two big stops. With 2:00 left in regulation, the Bulldogs found themselves down by four, 78-82 following a JMU dunk by Lewis. The momentum had gone back and forth between the 'Dogs and the Dukes for much of the second half and it appeared to have swung in favor of JMU for good. Then, Johnson banked in his crucial three-pointer from the right side of the arc, pulling the home team to within one point of the visiting Dukes. On the ensuing JMU possession,
Derek Webster, Jr. drew a charge from
DeVelle Phillips, his fifth foul of the game, giving the Bulldogs the ball back with 32 seconds left. Plenty of time for
Duggar Baucom's feverish style of play. Out of the 30-second break for Phillips to sub out, the Bulldogs streaked down the court and Harris calmly hit the game-winning three from the left side off a feed from nobody else than Johnson just in front of his own bench with 22 seconds remaining. The Dukes would go on to miss a go-ahead layup of their own with 12 seconds remaining, and with three seconds left, Banks heaved up a desperate half-court shot, but it fell short as time expired, giving the Bulldogs the exciting two-point victory.
THE HISTORY WITH SOUTH FLORIDA
The Citadel is 1-2 all-time against South Florida. The lone win, 66-56, in the series for the 'Dogs came on Jan. 7, 1973 in Charleston. The two program have not met since the 1999-2000 season, when the Bulls won 98-72 in the Pearl Harbor Invitational in Laie, Hawai'i.
SCOUTING THE BULLS
South Florida, 3-1, returns just two starters and one other player from last year's team and welcomed 12 newcomers to the program prior to the season.
David Collins leads the team with an average of 15.5 points per game. He has shot 45.8 percent from the field.
Justin Brown and
Nikola Scekic are the other two returners on the 2018-19 roster. Brown is fourth on the team with an average of 10.8 points per game.
T.J. Lang and
Laquincy Rideau each average just over 11 points per game with Rideau leading the team with 26 assists and 10 steals.
