Citadel Basketball Hits the Road for Pair of SoCon Games

CHARLESTON, S.C. –
 The Citadel men's basketball team jumps back into Southern Conference play this week with two road games at Wofford (Jan. 3) and Furman (Jan. 5). The Bulldogs and Terriers will tip off at 7 p.m. in Spartanburg with Saturday's game at Furman slated for 4 p.m.

NEXT UP
The Citadel will welcome ETSU and Western Carolina to McAlister Field House on Thursday, Jan. 10 and Saturday, Jan. 12. The game with WCU will mark the first of three games for the Bulldogs on the Southern Conference's new Nexstar Package.

THE BULLDOGS NATIONALLY
The Citadel ranks in the top 50 in NCAA Division I in 10 statistical categories, including leading the nation in scoring (99.1 points per game) and 3-pointers made per game (14.0). The 'Dogs are third in 3-point field goal attempts (451), fourth in total 3-pointers made (168) and seventh in assists per game (18.9). The Bulldogs are also tied for 17th in defensive rebounds per game (29.92), 18th in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.47), 29th in field goal percentage (.490), tied for 29th in total assists (227) and 47th in steals per game (8.2).

STALLWORTH NATIONALLY
Lew Stallworth enters the week 10th in the nation with an average of 6.9 assists per game, tied for 17th with 83 totals assists, tied for 40th with five double-doubles and tied for 43rd in field goal percentage (.582).

FRIERSON NATIONALLY
Matt Frierson enters the week first in all of NCAA Division I with an average of 5.08 3-pointers made per game, second with 61 3-pointers made and sixth with 135 3-point field goal attempts.

NAJDAWI NAMED SOCON STUDENT-ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Citadel men's basketball standout Zane Najdawi has been named the Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week, it was announced by the league office Wednesday afternoon. Najdawi is the first Citadel Bulldog to earn the honor since tennis cadet-athlete Willem van Zyl earned the distinction last spring. A native of Midlothian, Virginia, Najdawi boasts a 3.447 grade-point average as a sport management major, and finished the Fall 2018 semester with a 4.0, the third 4.0 semester of his career (Fall 2017, Spring 2018, Fall 2018). He was also named to the 2017-18 National Association for Basketball Coaches (NABC) Honors Court and earned the 2017-18 SoCon Commissioner's Medal. Najdawi is a two-time SoCon Honor Roll (2017-18, 2016-17) selection and was a Spring 2018 Southern Conference Academic All-Conference honoree.

FRIERSON KEEPING THE STREAK ALIVE
Frierson ended the game with five 3-pointers, marking the 35th game of his career, 11th this season, that the senior guard has converted at least four 3-pointers. He has now made at least one 3-pointer in 50 straight games.

CLOSING IN ON 1,000
With his 17 points against Longwood, Frierson now has 995 career points.

THE STARTING FIVE GETTING IT DONE
For the sixth-straight game, three of the Bulldogs' starting five players finished the game with double-digit points. Stallworth led the 'Dogs with 23 points and Najdawi and Frierson each had 17.

BLOCK PARTY FOR NAJDAWI
Najdawi had three blocks against Longwood, marking the 47th career game he has tallied multiple blocks. He now has 166 career blocks, second-most in program history.

NON-CONFERENCE SCHEDULE
The Bulldogs' 8-3 record in non-conference games is the best since the 2001-02 team went 8-3 before Southern Conference play.

MOVING ON UP
In the game against Longwood, Najdawi moved up in The Citadel record book in multiple categories. He went from 10th to eighth in scoring  with 1,371 career points, moved up from 12th to 11th in career field goals made with 468, moved up from 12th to eighth in career offensive rebounds with 215 and moved up from 10th to ninth in career total rebounds with 605.

THE HISTORY WITH WOFFORD
The Citadel is 49-56 all-time against Wofford, dating back to the 1920-21 season. The Terriers have won three of the last five, and seven of the last 10, meetings between the two. Last season, the two teams split the home-and-home series with each protecting their home court. Wofford won the first matchup, 109-92, on Jan. 6 and the Bulldogs defeated the Terriers, 80-78, on Feb. 1. In Spartanburg, Wofford holds a 28-18 record over The Citadel.

SCOUTING THE TERRIERS
Wofford enters the week 10-4, including 4-1 in the last five games and 2-0 in SoCon play. The Terriers boast wins over High Point, South Carolina, Coastal Carolina, UNC Asheville, ETSU and Western Carolina. The Terriers are averaging 81.6 points per game, while holding opponents to 63.1 points per game. Wofford has shot 47.3 percent from the field and 38.3 percent from beyond the 3-point arc. The Terriers have been led by seniors Fletcher Magee and Cameron Jackson, and junior Nathan Hoover. Magee has averaged 17.5 points per game with Jackson averaging 15.2. Magee leads the team with 53 3-pointers, while shooting 36.3 percent from beyond the 3-point arc. Jackson leads the team with 7.9 rebounds per game, and has shot 59.2 percent from the field. Hoover averages 12.8 points per game. Storm Murphy, the Terriers' fourth-leading scorer with 8.3 points per game, leads the team with 47 assists. Magee, Jackson and Keve Aluma have started all 14 games and Murphy has started 12.

THE HISTORY WITH FURMAN
Furman holds a 122-87 record over The Citadel dating back to 1920. The Paladins have won four of the last five meetings, and seven of the last 10. The Paladins hold a 69-29 record over the Bulldogs in Greenville. Last season, Furman and The Citadel split the two meetings with each team winning at home. The Bulldogs won 100-92 in overtime in Charleston on Feb. 3.

SCOUTING THE PALADINS
Furman started the season off 12-0 and climbed to 24th in the national polls, boasting road wins over Loyola Chicago and Villanova to go along with wins over Western Carolina, Elon, USC Upstate and UNC Wilmington. The Paladins have dropped their last two games to LSU and ETSU to sit 12-2 overall and 1-1 in league action. Furman has averaged 79.8 points per game, while holding opponents to 66.6 points per outing. The Paladins have shot 47.1 percent from the field and 35.4 percent from beyond the 3-point arc. Jordan Lyons and Matt Rafferty have led Furman in scoring with 17.4 points and 16.7 points per game. Rafferty is shooting 65.3 percent from the field and leads the team with 8.9 rebounds and 4.4 assists per game. Clay Mounce, the third-leading scorer with 11.4 points per contest, is shooting 52.5 percent from the field and leads the team from 3-point range as he connects on 43.8 percent of his 3-point attempts. Noah Gurley and Alex Hunter are each averaging 8.8 points per game with Hunter second on the team in assists (3.9). Lyons, Rafferty, Mounce and Hunter have started all 14 games for the Paladins with Gurley having started eight.
