Game Preview: Bulldogs Set to Close out 2019 on the Road

CHARLESTON, S.C. –
 The Citadel basketball team closes out the 2019 portion of the 2019-20 season with a pair of road games. The Bulldogs first travel to Framville, Virginia to face Longwood on Thursday, Dec. 19, and will play at NC State on Sunday, Dec. 22 before returning home to Charleston.

LAST TIME OUT
Three freshmen finished with double-digit points and accounted for over half of The Citadel basketball team's points on Dec. 10 as the Bulldogs notched a 129-83 victory over Piedmont College in the final home game of 2019. The Bulldogs shot 57.5% (46-80) from the field for the game, including 60.0% (24-40) in the opening half, while the Lions shot 37.1% (26-70) from the field. The Citadel converted 14 3-pointers as a team, including a game-high six from freshman Fletcher Abee. Abee led all scorers with a career-high 27 points off 10-of-16 (.625) shooting. The Morganton, North Carolina native went 6-for-9 (.667) from long range. Fellow freshman Rudy Fitzgibbons, III was just behind him with a career-high 25 points off 7-of-13 (.538) shooting, including four 3-pointers. Fitzgibbons converted a rare four-point play and added six rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals in the win. Freshman Brady Spence ended the night with a career-high 16 points off 5-of-6 (.833) shooting from the field. Spence matched his career high with three blocked shots and brought down five boards.

WIN NO. 50 FOR BAUCOM AT THE CITADEL
The victory over Piedmont on Dec. 10 marked the 50th win at the helm of the program for head coach Duggar Baucom, moving him into sole possession of eighth in program history for career wins. Baucom now boasts 31 home wins, the seventh-most in program history for a head coach.

WIN NO. 995 FOR THE PROGRAM
The win over Piedmont was the 995th win in program history.

ECLIPSING THE CENTURY MARK
The 129 points scored by the Bulldogs on Dec. 10 against Piedmont were the most since the 2018-19 squad scored 127 against Johnson & Wales (Charlotte) on Dec. 5, 2018. The 129 points scored mark the seventh-most points ever scored by The Citadel in a game. The win over Piedmont marked the 23rd time that the 'Dogs have scored at least 100 points under Baucom's guidance. The Citadel is 20-3 in Baucom's tenure when eclipsing the century mark and 50-5 all-time in program history.

SCORING 70 IN THE FIRST HALF
The Bulldogs scored 70 points in the first half of the win over Piedmont, marking the most points scored in a single half since the 2018-19 Bulldogs netted 73 against Mid-Atlantic Christian on Nov. 12, 2018. In that same game, the 'Dogs scored 75 points in the first half. The 70 points scored in the first half against Piedmont are tied for the sixth most in program history.

CONVERTING FIELD GOALS AGAINST PIEDMONT
The 46 made field goals are tied for 11th in program history for a single game.

THE HISTORY WITH LONGWOOD
Thursday's game will mark just the second meeting on the hardwood between The Citadel and Longwood. The Lancers took the first meeting, 110-94 last season in Charleston.

SCOUTING THE LANCERS
Longwood is currently 5-6 on the year with wins over Marymount, Maryland Eastern Shore, Saint Francis (Brooklyn), Randolph and Stetson. The win over the Hatters broke up a five-game losing skid that ran from Nov. 18 - Dec. 7. The Lancers enter the week averaging 66.0 points per game compared to 64.9 by their opponents. Longwood is currently shooting 40.9% from the field and 33.3% from beyond the 3-point arc. Longwood's 11 opponents have shot a combined 42.5% from the field and 32.4% from long range, while out-rebounding the Lancers 35.7-34.0.

LONGWOOD INDIVIDUALLY
Longwood has seen eight players play in all 11 games, but only JaShaun Smith and Abraham Deng have started all 11 games. Shabooty Phillips, Jaylon Wilson and Jordan Cintron have all started nine games. Phillips leads the team with 10.0 points per game with Wilson second, averaging 9.9 points per contest. DeShaun Wade is third on the team with an average of 8.2 points per outing. Smith, Christian Wilson and Cintron all average just over 7.0 points per game. Cintron leads the team in rebounding with 5.9 boards per contest and Wade is second with an average of 4.1 rebounds per game. Juan Munoz leads the team with 30 assists despite missing two games, and Phillips is second on the squad with 25 assists, but has 34 turnovers. Five Lancers have all converted at least 10 3-pointers led by Phillips' 17 and Jaylon Wilson and Smith with 15. Leslie Nkereuwem is shooting 57.1% from the field, while Smith is shooting 44.4% from long range.

THE HISTORY WITH NC STATE
NC State controls the all-time series 16-1 with the Bulldogs' lone win coming back during the 1940-41 season when the 'Dogs defeated the Wolfpack 57-50 in Raleigh. The two teams have met just twice since the turn of the century after meeting three straight years (1981-82, 1982-83, 1983-84) in the North-South Doubleheader tournament held in Charlotte, North Carolina. The two last met on Nov 19, 2005 with the Pack defeating The Citadel, 91-59.

SCOUTING THE WOLFPACK
NC State is currently 8-2 on the year, and will play one final game at Auburn on Thursday, Dec. 19 before returning home to face the Bulldogs on Sunday. The Pack's only two losses came in the regular-season opener to Georgia Tech (Nov. 5) and against No. 16 Memphis in Brooklyn, New York. NC State boasts wins over FIU, Wisconsin and Wake Forest, as well as UNCG and Little Rock. As a team, the Wolfpack is averaging 82.5 points per game compared to 70.6 points per outing by their opponents, a +11.9 scoring margin. NC State has connected on 48.1% of their attempts from the field, including 37.6% from long range, while their opposition has converted 43.8% of their shots and 36.3% from beyond the 3-point arc. NC State averages 8.3 3-pointers and 34.3 rebounds per game.

NC STATE INDIVIDUALLY
Five players currently average double-digit points led by C.J. Bryce's 15.9 points per game and Markell Johnson's 13.0 points per outing. Devon Daniels and Jericole Hellems both average just over 11.0 points per outing, while DJ Funderburk is currently contributing 10.1 points per contest. Of the eight players to have played in at least eight of NC State's 10 games, Funderburk leads the team with a .625 shooting percentage, while Pat Andree leads the team with a .476 percentage from beyond the arc. Braxton Beverly, who is one of just two players to have started all 10 games, averages 9.6 points and 2.1 3-pointers per game with Andree adding 2.0 treys per outing. Manny Bates is the only other player to have started all 10 games, averaging 6.5 points, 19.8 minutes and 3.6 rebounds per game. Johnson, who has started all nine games he has appeared in, leads the team with 56 assists. Bryce has started eight of the Pack's 10 games and leads the team with 6.5 boards per outing.

COMING UP
Following the game in Raleigh, the Bulldogs will be off until New Years Day, when the 'Dogs will continue the three-game road swing with a Southern Conference game at Samford. Tipoff for the Jan. 1 game is slated for 3 p.m. Eastern.

Fans attending ticketed athletic events at The Citadel this year are reminded of the new clear bag policy that has been implemented. Under the policy, fans will be allowed to bring with them a clear plastic, vinyl or PVC bag that does not exceed 12 inches by 6 inches by 12 inches, or a one-gallon plastic bag (such as Ziploc or Hefty bags). The bags may have a logo on one side that is no larger than 4.5 inches by 3.4 inches. Bags carrying a properly sized logo of other teams or venues are permitted.
