Bulldogs Close Out Regular Season by Hosting UNCG, Traveling to VMI

CHARLESTON, S.C. –
 The Citadel men's basketball team wraps up the regular season this week with a game at home followed by a quick road trip. The Bulldogs will first host UNC Greensboro in the home finale at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 28. The 'Dogs will then travel to Lexington, Virginia for a 1 p.m. game at VMI in the regular-season finale.

THE BULLDOGS NATIONALLY
The Citadel comes into this week's two games in the top 50 in the nation in five statistical categories. The Bulldogs are second in NCAA Division I in total 3-pointers made (323), 3-point field goals attempted (957) and 3-pointers made per game (12.0). The 'Dogs are fourth in scoring, averaging 85.5 points per game, and are also 46th in assists per game (15.5).

STALLWORTH NATIONALLY
Lew Stallworth is currently in the top 60 in the nation in five different categories. The point guard form Los Angeles, California is 19th in assists per game (6.1), 21st in total assists (164) and 22nd in total field goals made (207). Stallworth is 41st in scoring, averaging 20.2 points per game, and 60th in field goal percentage (.536).

FRIERSON NATIONALLY
Matt Frierson heads into this week in the top 15 in NCAA Division I in three 3-point categories. Frierson is tied for eighth in made 3-pointers per game (3.62), tied for 10th in 3-pointers attempted (253) and tied for 15th in total 3-point field goals made (94).

NAJDAWI NATIONALLY
Zane Najdawi has moved up in recent weeks and is now in the top 50 in NCAA Division I in blocked shots. The Midlothian, Virginia native is 43rd in blocks per game (1.96) and tied for 45th with 53 blocks.

STALLWORTH ECLIPSING 1,000 CAREER POINTS
With his 23 points scored against Samford on Senior Day, Stallworth eclipsed the 1,000-point mark for his collegiate career. He now boasts 1,012 career points and has eclipsed the 20-point mark 14 times this season. Stallworth came into the season with just 467 points scored in his first three years, an average of 5.9 points per game in 79 games played.

1,000-POINT TEAMMATES
With Stallworth scoring his 1,000th-career collegiate point on Saturday against Samford, joining teammates Najdawi and Frierson as 1,000-point scorers, The Citadel is now one of 11 men's basketball programs in the country to feature at least three 1,000-point scorers currently on the roster. The list includes Ball State, Hartford, UIC, Lipscomb, Kansas State, Nevada, Northwestern, TCU, Virginia Tech and Washington. Nevada leads the way with seven players currently boasting at least 1,000 points for their college careers.

WINNING UNDER BAUCOM
With Saturday's win over Samford, the Bulldogs have notched 12 wins this season, matching the 2016-17 team for most under head coach Duggar Baucom.

WIN NO. 45 FOR BAUCOM
The home win over Samford marked the 45th win at The Citadel for Baucom. His 45 wins rank tied for ninth all-time in program history.

WINNING AT HOME
With one home game remaining and an 8-6 home record, the Bulldogs are guaranteed a positive record at home for the first time since the 2016-17 season. That squad went 8-8 at home. The 2014-15 team was the last team to finish above .500 at home with an 8-6 record.

THE BULLDOGS IN OVERTIME
Saturday's 87-83 overtime win over Samford marked just the second overtime game this season for The Citadel. The Bulldogs are a perfect 4-0 in overtime in the last two seasons.

STALLWORTH IN THE CITADEL RECORD BOOK
Stallworth's 545 points scored this season place him seventh in program history for points scored in a single season. His 207 made field goals this season rank sixth in program history. The graduate transfer point guard has 164 assists on the year, a mark that has him third in program history.

BLOCK PARTY FOR NAJDAWI
Najdawi set a career high against Samford with seven blocked shots, including four in the opening half. He is second all-time for blocked shots in program history with 193. He is 22 behind Kirill Misyuchenko (1995-98) for first. The seven-block performance marked the 56th game in his illustrious career that the Midlothian, Virginia native recorded multiple blocks in a game. Najdawi has recorded multiple blocks in each of the last five games for the Bulldogs, and has rejected at least three field goals in 10 games this season. For the year, Najdawi boasts 53 blocks. The mark has his 2018-19 season fifth in program history for blocks in a single season. Najdawi boasts four of the program's top-10 performances for blocks in a single season.

3 FOR 3
Frierson converted three 3-pointers against Samford, giving him 94 on the season. His 94 made treys is fourth in program history for a single season. Frierson, who set the program record for career made treys in the game at UNCG (Jan. 24), now boasts 314 triples. Frierson's 114 triples during last season's campaign are the program benchmark.

FRIERSON IN SOCON HISTORY
Frierson is currently sixth in Southern Conference history with 314 made 3-pointers in his career. He is third among active players, behind Wofford's Fletcher Magee (first, 477) and UNCG's Francis Alonso (fourth, 376).

FRIERSON RISING THROUGH THE RANKS
With his 11 points scored at home against Samford, Frierson now boasts 1,112 career points scored. The mark moved him up into a tie for 25th in program history with Alan Puckett (1998-2002).

THE HISTORY WITH UNC GREENSBORO
UNC Greensboro holds a 27-9 record all-time over The Citadel, including an 11-5 mark in Charleston. The Spartans have won the last 10 meetings, with the last win in the series for the Bulldogs coming back on Jan. 5, 2015, 85-83 in overtime in Greensboro.

SCOUTING THE SPARTANS
UNCG enters the week with a 24-5 overall record, including a 13-3 mark in Southern Conference play and a 9-4 record on the road. The Spartans have wrapped up the No. 2 seed in next week's 2019 Ingles Southern Conference Basketball Championships presented by General Shale in Asheville, North Carolina. Earlier this season, the Spartans boasted winning streaks of eight (Jan. 12 - Feb. 9) and seven games (Dec. 7 - Jan. 5). The last time the Spartans were on the road, UNCG fell 67-57 at Furman (Feb. 14) and 80-50 at Wofford (Feb. 16), but since those losses, UNCG has won the last two games. UNCG averages 76.2 points per game while holding opponents to 67.0 points per outing. The Spartans have connected on 45.8 percent of their shots from the field compared to 43.4 percent by their opposition. Both the Spartans and their opponents have averaged over 7.0 3-pointers per contest, including 7.7 per game by UNCG and 7.1 per outing from their foes.

THE SPARTANS INDIVIDUALLY
UNCG is led in scoring by Francis Alonso's 16.7 points per game, Isaiah Miller's 15.0 points per contest and Kyrin Galloway's 9.6 points per outing. Of those players who have taken at least 200 shots on the year, Miller and Galloway are leading the team in shooting. Miller has connected on 50.4 percent of his attempts from the field and Galloway has converted 50.2 percent of his shot attempts. Alonso leads the team with 75 3-pointers made on the year, but Galloway leads the team in 3-point shooting percentage, connecting on 40.4 percent of his attempts from long range. Under the basket, James Dickey leads the way with 7.8 rebounds per game, despite missing six games. Eric Hamilton is second on the squad with 4.8 boards per contest. Demetrius Troy leads the team with 118 assists, and Miller has a team-high 87 steals. Alonso and Troy are the only two players to have started every game, and Galloway has started 28 of his 29 games played. Dickey has started all 23 games he has appeared in. Malik Massey has made 16 starts and Miller has started 13 games, but has seen action in all 29.

THE HISTORY WITH VMI
The Citadel holds a 58-53 all-time record over VMI, but the Keydets boast a 30-21 advantage over the Bulldogs in Lexington, Virginia. The Bulldogs won the first meeting of the season and have won two of the last three, including last season's 78-70 win in the first round of the 2018 Southern Conference Basketball Championships presented by General Shale. The Citadel last defeated VMI in Lexington on Feb. 18, 2002, 75-55. The Bulldogs won 10 straight meetings twice, from Jan. 7, 1957 – Feb. 13, 2961 and Dec. 2, 1968 – Feb. 12, 2973.

SCOUNTING THE KEYDETS
VMI is currently 8-20 overall on the year, including 2-14 in SoCon action, and 6-7 at home. The Keydets most recently went on the road to defeat Western Carolina, 83-78, on Feb. 23, completing the season sweep over the Catamounts. VMI averages 75.0 point per game while allowing their opponents to score 81.6 points per contest. The Keydets have converted 42.4 percent of their attempts from the field, while the opposition has been hitting on 47.3 percent of their shot attempts. VMI averages 9.8 3-pointers per game compared to 8.9 by their foes. VMI has connected on 35.1 percent of shots from beyond the 3-point arc with opponents shooting 36.6 percent from long range.

THE KEYDETS INDIVIDUALLY
VMI is led by Bubba Parham's 20.6 points per game, a stat that has him first in the league. Behind Parham, Myles Lewis averages 10.8 points per contest and Garrett Gilkeson averages 10.5 points per outing and Sarju Patel contributes 9.5 points per game. Gilkeson leads the team in shooting, having connected on 46.0 percent of his field goal attempts. Of those players who have taken at least 100 shots, Lewis, Jake Stephens and Tyler Creammer are all shooting over 45.0 percent from the field. Lewis is connecting on 45.9 percent of his shots from the field, Stephens is shooting 45.6 percent from the field and Creammer has connected on 45.0 percent of his attempts. Gilkeson leads the way in rebounding with 6.2 boards per contest followed by Creammer's 5.8. Parham, Lewis and Gilkeson have started all 28 games this season. Greg Parham and Creammer have both started 16 games, Stephens has made 12 starts and Patel has started eight games.

NEXT UP
The Bulldogs will travel to Asheville, North Carolina for the 2019 Ingles Southern Conference Basketball Championships presented by General Shale. The men's tournament will be held at the U.S. Cellular Center and will get underway on Friday, March 8 with two first-round games.
